Hi guys, finally getting ready to assemble the 350 for the Skylark and have a question about the intake and head ports. Background, originally a 1972 2bbl California car with air pump. Converting to a 4bbl intake, no air pump. Forget the year, sorry. All was going well heads torqued on assembly well under way until I trial fit the intake on. there is a passage on all four corners that are not fully covered by the intake manifold. Not sure if this is normal. I was going to use a steel bathtub style intake gasket with RTV on the ends. The gasket has holes where these holes are. Am I missing something here? Are these dead holes or holes associated with the air pump intake. Unfortunately, I don't have the intake here at home. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Don't want to remove heads to see where these passages go.
Those are the AIR holes, those will leak exhaust unless they are plugged. Thats a straight shot into the exhaust ports.
egr engine vs non egr. if you have the other intake look at it. egr intakes are sometimes different. 455's are egr and non egr. no interchange
Since your heads are assembled unless your willing to remove them and take them apart , then you have on option of drilling and taping them, you need to plug them with cup plugs or using a ciramic epoxy to block it.
Check your accelerator cable as there is a difference in length. Make sure it fully opens the 4 barrel carb.
Thanks for the reply, guys. I thought they might be something associated with the air system but do not have the original intake at home to trace the holes. Thought this would be a simple project but,,, lol. Measured holes .312" but at a crazy angle at intake side. Will be interesting trying to start a tap. Will check into cup plugs. Not crazy about removing heads. Yes, I knew about the different length of accelerator cable and also the different cable brackets. Was going to assemble and install engine then check the carb does open fully. Read numerous posts where some guys claim they used original cable with no issues but, need to see for myself first hand. Have a few cables laying around from different cars if required. Will keep everybody posted on outcome. Thanks, Chris.
