    It's the roof that's different. \

    Hmm - the Tag in my Buick says 4839 but my roof looks like the one in the first picture. Also the List of the first answer confuses me what is a hardtop sedan? I thought it is a hardtop OR a sedan. How can it be both- like in the List?

    Yeah, I always thought it was the post that made it a sedan. With no post it's a hardtop. Very confusing. Mine is a 4469, which is a 4 door sedan according to the chart. It has a post.

    The term "Riviera" when not applied to the coupes that we all know and love as Rivieras - the distinct carline - has always meant hardtop or pillarless. The regular Electra 4 dr. sedan with "B" pillars is called just that.

    I might have it backwards? Let me check..............

    I asked over at AACA;

    John,
    Don't forget about the '52 4 door sedan Rivieras

    BTW: I always liked the sloping roof better.

    I lean toward the slab top. I think it goes with the rakish styling of the body. Especially on the '59.

    You got a good point and it is confusing.. you gotta remember that 4-door hardtops were a new thing in the '50s , so anything that was a four-door was called a sedan - the 4-dr hardtops were often called hardtop sedans or sport sedans, but maybe they shoulda been called 4-door coupes

    Hardtop means no-post, so yes your hardtop sedan is a four door without the post. Sedan is always a four door however. With or without the post. Coupe always a 2 door.
