what is the best timing degre for my riviera gs 72?

I go to the garage for tuning and the guy set the timing to 4 degre. my riviera roll like crap now :( whent I push to hard the car bug. I set the car to about 20* and the car run better but not as good then before.

    Thanks

4 degrees is the stock timing for the 1972 engines. Try 12 degrees initial timing. I assume you have a timing light. Disconnect the vacuum advance before setting your timing. Then rev the motor while watching the timing mark. The mark should move up, and beyond your sight, if the mechanical advance is working correctly. Check your vacuum advance to make sure it is working. Connect the vacuum cannister to direct manifold vacuum and see if the timing mark moves, and the engine speeds up. Sometimes the diaphram inside the cannister goes bad. With 12* initial, you should have about 30* total in the distributor, without vacuum advance. The vaccum advance should add about 14* more at light load, which should be fine for a stock 72 motor. Good luck.
