Why does every yokel that thinks they knows cars; "What ya got?" "455" "Oh yeah, the Rocket" I cant tell you how tired I am of hearing that. You would think the Olds Rocket was the most bad-a$$ motor on the planet because no one can imagine another company made a different motor.
Tell me about it. I cant tell you how many times I have to explain that my Riviera is NOT FWD. I think Im going to strangle the next dope that tries telling me that. Or when Im in my cammed 71 GS- "Whats in there? a big block Chevy":spank: As if that is the only engine capable of making power. I usually say in reply "No, I wanted to go fast"
About as annoying as when you own an olds 350, and you get people saying, oh yea the SMALL block.... The short and sweet answer is "sure...". Nod and smile You can always tell the people who are actually curious to learn about the car, and the people who start the conversation so they can brag about theirs. Its just the way it is, dont take it to heart.
Thats a good one, my buddy uses that all the time. He recently got alot of work done at a local machine shop, known for their performance builds. They specialize in fords. My buddy is trying to get his 4.10 changed out for a 3.08 and the guy keeps advising against it. They always end up arguing about how its gonna rob power, and he should have gone with a ford. Always ends with, Yea but i wanted a powerful car.
No sh*t! That has to be the 2nd most common comment I get about the '70 Riv, aside from the Rocket 455 comment. The darndest thing is, when I bought my '96 Riviera, I had to correct a couple of guys at work who thought it was rear wheel drive and a V8. ou:
I was at the NHRA races this weekend at a BBQ. There was a mopar guy in the food line with me and he was talking to me it kinda went like this....... Him: Hey Mike Garrison, Howya been remember me? Me: You look familiar who are you? Him: Im Ron Ward I work for the KCIR as an announcer Me: OH Yea you had the dodge dart or something Him:Yea but it was a demon you should know that ... Me: Yea demon dart its kinda hard to tell in the rearveiw mirror.. Crowd around us: OOOOOOOOOOOOO Him: Ouch that smarts another dodge fan: Whats he got? Him: A buick GS. Fan: BUICK!!?? WTF those never ran good. I never saw any that were fast ever. Me: you never ran one then did you. Fan: Nope How fast is it.... Me: It runs in the 11s easily enough.. (liing my ass off) Him: Wow you stepped up from the last time we raced did you finally build a chevy motor for it? Me no I just threw my wifes stocker motor together with a big cam with headers to make it run better. (more lies) FAN: Stocker motor? HIM: Yea his wifes car went 12.70's in stock manifolds I saw it. My daughter joins in here: DAD I thought you went low 10s? Fan: 10S!!!!!!I thought you went 11s Me: Maybe it did run a few 10s. Fan I thought you said it was a stocker? me: I said it started out as a stocker. Him: You havent changed ever ,,,still trying to get suckers to race. Me: Just the Dodge guys, just the dodge guys...
LOL! Thats a good story. If I could ever keep a straight face while saying that, it would be a lot of fun!
It's not just you bbb guys- I hear it all the time too. I gotta admit though, "rocket" is a pretty bitchin name for a motor
I tell ford guys that if ford had decent motors, they would come with a frame. I had to go through the whole thing with the buick motors a couple times this weekend. the 455 olds and 455 buick being the same on both occasions. I don't even have a 350 or 455 to confuse these people and I've still got to try and educate people all the time.
its allways fun trying to stop Beth from storming the tower at the track when the announcer calls her car a Vista Cruiserou: D.
I sold my old bracket car ( 64 Skylark ) to a guy here in Pahrump who put a 454 Chebby in it. I tried to get him to go with a Buick I even offered to donate a good 455 block and crank. Well he would have nothing to do with that and he put in his 454 that was by no means stock. He went a 12.30 or something close to that. Since he is a nice guy I didn't say much but finally I couldn't resist. I told him he spent an awful lot of money to slow the car down by over a second. I told him I still have the block and crank and we can round up some more stock parts add a little cam and headers and still go 12.30 and burn less fuel too boot. Luckily he is a good natured guy because he makes two of me and is about 30 years younger.ou: Bob H.
Tell them this is one of a kind, and you converted it to RWD. They'll probably go ga ga and ogle the car like crazy.
