I live in the sticks of PA. I have found a great machine shop with reasonable prices and tons of experience with Chevrolet and Fords. National exposure in car publications, drag cars running as well as 8 seconds etc. When I asked about Buick 455's oil mods they said if I could provide the references they could do the work.

Opinions? Run away or take a leap of faith?

    Oil mods

I'm doing the same thing to a 455 here in Ontario and have been working on this for one year.
If the machine shop your using is as good as you say, then they should be well capable of handling your needs. What I have found is the guys up here are very good as well, but mainly with Chevy.
So I have takin the time to research this board as much as I possibly can. The info I have got out of this site is unbelievable! :TU:
I have found that after awhile I was becoming more knowledgeable then the guys at my machine shop (on some things on the 455 only)
I'm no engine builder by any means, nor a machinest. All I'm saying is the more research you do the the better off you are. Believe me I've suprised the guys at my engine builders with some things I learned from THIS SITE.
Take your time and and work with the guys and you'll be OK. All the best,Jim :beer

Give the shop an easy test . Ask them what is accepatable range of clearances for main and rod bearings on a Buick 455. Also ask them to specify the conditions under which they take the measurement to verify the clearances.

    Thanks guys.

I have seen the referenced articles on buickperformance.com they are great.
I also did a search on this and the 455 race forum for 455 oiling mods which turned up a lot of good info.

One of the postings led me to believe that grooved cam bearings make the oil mods unnecessary. Is that the case or should the oil mods be in addition to the grooved cam bearings?

Also, no point in asking the question unless I know the correct answer.

.0015" on the mains, .0018" on the rods???

Any books I should be reading before I spend $900 on Machine work at a primarily Chevrolet shop?
