I have a 74 455 waiting to be rebuilt with an HEI distributor. (coil on cap) I'd like to use this on my running 70 350
(just change out the dist gear from the 70)
does someone have the wiring schematic for the HEI?

also does someone sell a conventional cap where i can use a higher quality remote coil? anyone know part numbers?

    Nate

no wiring schematic needed for hei, just run a hot wire to the terminal in the cap, and a tach wire if applicable.

HLY-821-1 is the remote coil adapter kit. it's just a coil cover with a hole in it, and a brass post and terminal. you could probably make one yourself if you were so inclined.

The HEI only has one connection for full time 12 volts. That means you either have to bypass, or replace the resistor wire in the engine harness. MSD makes a coil cover, and coil wire for external coil(part # 8402 I believe)

I have a 72 350 that I am putting in a stock HEI distributor, where should I pull the 12 volts off of, should I get a plug to hook up the 12volt wire into the distributor? Where would I get this plug?
    Thanks

    Tim,
Year One sells the wire, with the proper clip on both ends. The wire from the positive side of your points coil needs to be replaced with the Year One wire. You need to follow the wire back to the firewall connector. The firewall connector has a bolt in the middle. Remove the bolt, and the front half will come off. The front half houses all the wires for the engine compartment. Each wire snaps into the front half with a special clip. The year One wire has the clip, and the proper connection for the HEI distributor on the other end. Here's a picture. It's part # LOO510

As far as the remote coil distributor cap, the only thing I've found online is MSD part 8401, a modified coil dust cover that has a coil wire terminal off to the side, not out the top center like you'd think. Jegs wants $25, which seems awful pricey to me...although I'd like to have a remote coil, too.

Larry does that kit supply you with a wiring location? Reason is, it seems my wiring harness that I am using has been modified and the wire colors compared to the chassis manual are somewhat different colored.I am lucky though...I found a supply of the correct connectors and have the red wire I need. Just need to make sure I am putting the wire in the right spot.

    Hey, Big Vito
Just follow the original points wire back from the + side of the coil to the firewall connector. YO just sells the wire, no instructions. :Do No:

After I posted...I realized what it needed..Now Mr Wizard...What do you do about the alternator wire when you put a 1 wire alternator on?? Since I wont be driving this on the street everyday,I might delete the wire that goes back to the fuse box. I am also in wiring nightmare 101 as I am deleting the a/c part of this car as well as hooking up the kickdown switch on it. Think I have the kickdown figured out,now on to other great things...Darn fools who hack up wiring harnesses anyways...

Don't know about one wire alternators. I simply upgraded to the internally regulated alternator. Puts out triple the amperage at idle. Voltmeter reads 14 + volts all the time no matter what. Be careful with that 30 year old wiring. Wouldn't want to see you do the "smoke test" :Dou: Good luck :TU:

I am replacing every wire out under the hood area with new wire. I know I looked at all the interior harness and it is in really good shape. I figured since I would be stretching its legs all the time,I'd upgrade to good electronics. I will have to run a stock HEI with a new Summit coil, etc for now till maybe next winter season then possibly a new MSD or maybe I can spring for one of the IgnitionMans upgraded distributors. I know he has had health problems and I respect that he can't get to it right away, but what the heck,if its a good product, its worth the wait.I want to do away with the external regulator and go to a 100 amp 1 wire to help with my electric fuel pump, electric fan and other goodies.
