I just picked up a SF & a SS short block of of a guy. Theres a 4 spd ball stud on the side of the motor still, a windage tray inside. What year are they and what HP?? This Buick stuffs still fairly new to me..

  2. Tim, the SF code is for a 70 455 Riv, the SS is a Stage 1 block, someone else here should know the year off the top of their head.

    Tim -

What is the VIN on the SS block? It is between the #1 and #3 spark plugs. It should be 40HXXXXXX.

Also, just the cam is different on the shortblocks.

    Actually,

The SS code block will have a 5/8 hole for the oil pickup, and a 5/8 pickup tube.

The SF motor will have a 1/2 inch tube and hole in the block.

This was 70 only, as in 71, all blocks got the 5/8 stuff.

    pickup

It had a big pickup on it . Until the motor rolled over on the way home- And it got crushed ..:ball: :ball: A tube sticking out of the screen won,t do me much good..
Marco- I'll get the vin and post back.

    :Dou: Thanks JW

And thanks Tim - I'm just curious if I have the car in the registry, as the owner would probably be very interested :Brow:

Here is a thread which identifies all the specific Stage1 parts (including the 5/8 oil pick-up tube :Dou: )

    Enjoy!

PS - The fuel pump was also different :)

I believe the distributor curve and carb were also different. Stage1's had chrome valve covers.

who ...what ...when....had the windage tray?

I see a lot of crank scrapers for sale for also. Does the buick benefit more than others from the use of one?

Every 455 that I've been into has had a windage tray. From 70 to 76.
