I posted this before, I have a strange noise in my 455. It gets more noticable when warmed up. I had a couple members listen to it at the Nationals and they all said it was nothing to worry about. The owner of Stage One Performance was one. I'm interested in finding someone VERY KNOWLEGEABLE on Buick 455 on the east coast listen to this before I pull it. I'm a mechanic and never heard this noise in a 455 and eather has anyone who has listen to it. Thanks AL.

Does it sound like something is hitting the pan?

No, I think the engine is a little loose. I sometimes hear a lower engine knock on start up. Oil presure is excellent. I have a new 10/10 crank I will be installing this winter. I just would like for someone that really knows this engine to give me some ideas. The sound is like someone rolling dice in ther hand in the engine. AL.

I'm sure you know what the slight knock is. Are you using a double roller with the stg1 fuel pump? The chain is known to rub against the lever and must be modified. Or perhaps it was, and now there is more play in the chain.

You may be on to something, I installed a T/A timing case cover with a double roller Cloyes timing gears and chain, AL

I think Stage One engines used some sort of crank scraper that stopped the oil from being whipped up and creating an oil mist in the pan which affected oiling or horsepower during high RPMs. I think it mounted between the oil pan and the block and stuck out like a flat scraper just in front of the crankshaft. If you have one it may be loose or damaged. Just thinking outside the box.

If you installed a new T/A timing cover, the fuel pump bolt holes are drilled further out towards the front of the timing cover to prevent the fuel pump arm from hitting the double roller timing chain. I put the T/A cover on my 455 along with Rollmaster timing chain and do not have a problem with it hitting the fuel pump arm. The stock GM timing covers will have a problem with this if you don't enlongate the holes towards the front with the double roller timing chains. Just my expierience.

I think I remember reading that info. about the cover somewhere now that you mention it. Infact I have the same setup but not assembled yet. Perhaps the crank gear spacer was not installed allowing the gear to move forward. It is easy enough to remove two bolts to see if the lever was in contact with the chain.

I just got off the phone with the owner of PAE and had some good pointers but needed to hear it for him self. Jim said if he thinks of a good knowledgable source anound MD he would let me know, AL.

I had an intermittant rattling noise from the lower end with the same symptoms. I also had a turned crank & new bearings. Mine turned out to be a cracked windage tray at one of the tray bolts. The problem was solved with a new tray, but could also be corrected by brazing or tigging . I drove it for a while with no adverse affects.

    My 2 cents

Are you talking about the thin metal cover that bolts to the main bearing caps? AL.

Thats the one. Its held to the caps by 3 small fastners. Two attach the tray to main caps # 5 & 3 and the third one attaches the center of the tray to cap # 4 ..
Mine was cracked clean through the mounting ear at Cap 3, leaving the tray to hang and occasionally make noise.

Thanks guys!!! I'm going to pull it this winter because its not that bad right now. I think the crank is a bit to loose but the strong oil pressure and clean fresh engine it pretty quiet. I still think the noise is the loosness in the lower end but there is no knocking just once in a wile on first start up for a split second, AL.
