Ok I need some .040 over pistons for my 425 block. I had a set of 11.1 and had a ring landing let go. I pulled the motor apart to run the NOS and just checked everything and saw the ring landing was gone. I can fine hone the block and put new pistons back on the rods after the rotating assemble has been balanced again.I have a lot of money in this block and dont want to start over. Is there a Buick dealer out there that has FORGED pistons for this motor.I can not use cast they just wont hang. I could really use the help. A number to a place would help alot.

    Thanks Doug

    Doug,

Did you ever find those pistons?

What did you do with the ones you tool out - what size were they?

I'm rebuilding a 425 with a set of stock pistons and will possibly need to machine the block because of one cylnder.

    Appreciate your feedback.

    best regards
    Nick

I have a set of Ross 11.5:1 pistons in my 64 425. Kinda spendy, but everything for these motors can be like that. I did a lot of research and from what I have read/seen/heard, these pistons are the way to go. If you need more info, email me, I still have all the spec sheets and such.

    Have fun,

    compresion questions

I am in the process of restoring a 74 buick 455. I am aware that this year lacked in compression, that was the major power loss reason. Will shaving the heads down as much as possible, and using an aggresive cam, stronger springs in the heads, hardseating the valves, help with this power loss. Not sure if i should replace the pistons for some flattopped ones. i now have a 350.4 in my skylark, I just want more torque. not really building a drag car, but it'd be nice to have the power on the roads.. Basically, if someone pulls up next to me, i wanna be the first one off the line.... any tips.

first off, will it help without pistons,

2nd, how much more with flattop pistons.

    Ted, Matt
Thanks for the reply. I was reding about this in some old posts - so they did go ahead then. I'll check out the link.

The project is going OK. Came back from New York a couple of weeks ago with some goodies from the Man in New York - an HEI distributor, tubular pushrods, a set of lifters and one of his cams in my suitcase, plus 2 standard valve size rebuilt heads as additional luggage. Big result! - managed to persuade British Airways not to charge me excess baggage also.

Carmen is now rebuilding me a set of rocker arms.

I've also got a set of exhaust manifolds [managed to get hold of Frank's that we was selling], they got here cracked in 3 places so I've had them brazed up for about $35.
I've also collected a rear sump oil pan, and extedned oil pick up, Carmen hi pressure oil pump, set of high performance gaskets, new water pump, new fuel pump and am about pretty much good to go.

The block is in the machine shop having an old but suspect welded crack along the block checked out and having one pot looked at. The other 7 are absolutrely fine but one has suffered some detonation on the piston and affected the cylinder wall which I'd like to get to the bottom of and then decide how much we have to bore it.

Hence the need for 425 pistons. Carmen unfortunately doesn't have any old .020 or .030 overs and I'm told the Egge ones are heavier than the old ones. I guess if no one here has any they don't need then I'll call Postions, TA, Kenne Bell, Terrill Machine in Texas.

Take care and if anyone has some pistons they don't need, please shout!

The only ones I have that I don't need are a set of Egge's that are brand new. Bought in desparation! as for being heavier, I think I need to weigh them next to the Ross pistons I got. They aren't exactly flyweight!
Matt, do you think you could find the weight sheet on yours? I have mine pretty handy, but would like to compare. :beer

    Piston weights...

Did some digging thru about a million invoices for the million dollar Wildcat, and here are the weights....

    Piston A 801 g
    Piston B 805 g
    Piston C 803 g
    Piston D 804 g
    Piston E 801 g
    Piston F 802 g
    Piston G 804 g
    Piston H 803 g

Reading all these piston specs, I can't wait to hear that beast run. I will let you know how those roller rockers work out, too.

    Have fun,

    Matt

I have a couple extra used 425 standard bore pistons if that will do you any good.

    Guys,
many thanks for the offers. I'll check with the machine shop to see what they say about the overbore needed and get back to you all.

Meantime, any advice on forged vs std - forged obviosly beter but under what conditions do I really need them?

    thanks
    Nick
