Hey fellas! So about how much does a 425 buick weigh? We have a motor stand that says it can hold up to 750 pounds but my dad and I didnt wanna put it on there until we knew it would hold it. haha.

    Thanks!

Here is a chart with the 401 weight. They are similar to the 425 in weight as they share blocks, cranks, rods, heads, ect. You may want to get a 1200 pound stand as the weight listed is very close to the capasity of yours.

A complete nail head will weigh in the neighborhood of 640 lb. About 90 lb more than a sbc.

I don't think thats right Doc, The nailhead is not a lightweight block design like the later Big Blocks and should weigh more than a bit more since a 455 with aluminum heads is around 60lbs more than an iron SBC if I remember correctly. The number that comes to mind is around 800lbs in full dress but I could be very wrong. I have a 2-ton Engine stand so I don't really worry about putting anything short of Detroit Diesel on it.

    Nick,
Well pard, If you are worried that the engine stand wont hold the engine up, you can always just build the short block on it. You already have the engine out and on the ground. just take the heads and intake off and that will considerably reduce the weight. Then put the short block on the stand and do the work to it. When the short block is finished you can then take it off the stand and put it either in the car or on the ground and put your reworked heads on with the intake going on last.
Your engine stand is going to be rated for less than it is able to hold up due to liability fears. probably in the range of 1/4 to 1/2.
That said, do not trust any mechanical device that is made by man with your life or limb. also do not ever trust a tree limb or cinder blocks ect. use your brain. Very few people that get a car or engine down on them survive.
Use saftey stands and when you have something lifted up under a hoist dont get under it.

    Get a 1200 pound 4 leg stand.

Use grade 8 bolts to attach it to the stand.

DO NOT TAKE CHANCES with a heavy engine!

I had a BB Chevy tip over with a 3 leg stand. And, when it starts to fall, you will not be able to stop it.

630 #'s is the round figure we've always used. Unless it has a Dynaflow hooked to it :error:
