I didn't want to hear that, but thats how the chevy is and the washer is for that purpose. Now,do I take the chance and install from the top and hope the dist, doesn't need to come out? hmmm.
I know, I know do it right which I'll do,was just hoping the olds was different.
    Off comes the pan.
Wish I never got involved, but you know how it is when you've got a reputation building motors, especially when its a relative, you gots to do it.

70GSXFAN, you got me thinking..... so I went looking though old pics and remembered, that the first 557265 4A block I found had very large holes in the webs, I called Joe Mondello and he said it was a typo, but then went on to state "look for the 554990 4A and not the 557265 4A" "as the 557265 4A could be solid or windowed" So out to find the 554990 4A I went, along with finding a 330 forged crank, well I found both, in new Jersey yards, I had even went to PA. but that an other story [Lots of 455's there]
Well I went straight from the yard to my builder and droped it off, I knew I should have stayed and opened it up with him, but I had to get to the job site, Well I get a call that it is windowed, but not a large as the first block, so I call Joe Mondello and he states { now this is from memory } "I've heard of guys finding 403s with solid main web, but in reality they were windowed, but the window was smaller than normal, so there was more meat around the crank saddle."
So my builder built that block, only to have head gaskets blow, he blamed it on the ARP 1/2" head stud kit, he only torqued in two step instead of 5 as per ARP, to which he said was BS, "you should not have to stretch them like that" well that engine did not last 250 miles, he had "problems down below with clearances" his bad, he also o-ringed my #5 heads wrong, half the wire was in the cylinder bore, so he started over but refused to use as per mondello stuff like the studs for the heads.....
So now I just went out to look and he gave me a 557265 4B block, mother blank blank blank...... it is filled 3/4" - 1" from the deck though.....

Would you like to hear my eight year story to get my 468? three engines and 8 years with Lynn, Joe Mondello stepped in and I have a 468 "Murderous overkill" build.....

Sorry for the

I don't see why it can go in from the top, as there is not lot of room for it to get the angle it would need to get by the pump....

    Its amazing.
I went to the olds forum over 2 weeks ago with the same question, you know how many intelligent responses I got? ZERO, zilch, nada.
Just shows what a great board this is with a great bunch of members with knowledge in so many areas.
    Thanks
