i have a 66 electra that i believe is a 401 although it has the bump on the back of the engine that is supposed to be on the 425's. anyway i am trying to get it together to put back in the car but im running into a timing gear issue. i bought a timing set from autozone (its a brand name set) but the hole on the cam gear is smaller than my original, why is this? i looked in ta's catalog and it lists all the nailheads as using the same set.

    TIA:beer

Gary, Cloyes still has the crank gear, but they may be out of the timing gears....I bought the last one that Rockauto could find.
I called Melling, and they say they are still making them. Autozone carries Melling oil pumps, so they should be able to get the timing sets as well.

I actually phoned Mellings' tech support, as I didn't see any nailhead listings in their (old) online catalog. Maybe they can direct you to a distributor.

    Part Numbers:

    Melling:
    Crank Sprocket: S-276
    Cam Sprocket: S-332
    Chain: 491

    Cloyes:
    Crank Sprocket: S276
    Cam Sprocket: S332 (now discontinued)
    Chain: C483

    Federal Mogul:
    Crank Sprocket: 223-276
    Cam Sprocket: 223-332
    Chain: 222-491

    Clevite:
    Crank Sprocket: S-276
    Cam Sprocket: S-332
    Chain: 9-491

Cam Sprockets have become hard to find. But you can get sets from TA Perf, Postons, and Carmen Faso. Still about $80 for a basic set.

Autozone lists them, but I don't know the manufacturer.
Is there a number on the 'wrong' gear you got?

it was definatly listed for a 425 buick. i went to their website and it lists it for the buick 425 but not the 401. maybe whoever sets up their computer system screwed up? i did talk to Tony at Poston and he says he can get the correct one but they are on order and it will be a week or so before he gets them, so at least i know i can get one.

I just got a good look at my new set-up, and it is definitely the bigger gear with the larger hole. According to the GM parts book, 401 and 425 cams and sprockets are the same. What you've got appears to be a sprocket for a newer 400.
