Came home from cruise night a while back and all of a sudden my 1965 GS with a 401 and an Edlebrock 4 barrel carburetor will not idle. Under power it runs great, but when you come to a stop it dies. I have owned this car since 2005 and it has always run great. I have changed the fuel filter and PCV valve and also checked all of the vacuum lines for leaks. I have also disconnected the manual choke to make sure the choke was not the issue. Any thoughts on what might be the problem?

some of the things to check, look down the carb at idle, there should be no fuel coming out of the boosters. check your timing, but first see if the dist is tight and does not move. are you running points?

A deteriorated baseplate/heat shield could cause that problem....it can cause a huge vacuum leak.

Check the plug in the bottom of the intake manifold, another possible source for leaks.

Check intake manifold gaskets, sometimes they burn out in the centre because of the heat riser.

check the vac advance for a vacume leak.... double whammy,,, vac leak that leans the mixture out and the timing is retarded....
