hi, i just reinstalled my motor after cleaning, painting and installing a new water pump. i've set timing, dwell, spark plugs to factory specs, relpaced plug wires, rebuilt carb and it runs great at idle and light loads... its also preaty good with the pedal to the floor. my problem is in the meadium load range it chokes and falters...most of the trouble is in the 2000-3000 rpm range.. sounds like it is missing or carb trouble ??????????any help/ remidies are greatly appreciated... thanks todd, replaced plug wires , rebuilt carb:confused:

    Todd,
Did you have the same problem before you did the work??Was this a complete overhaul?? What year??Any chance the distributer could be off one notch either way????
What about a vacume leak??I wish I could offer more. Maybe someone else will chime in here. Good luck.

its a 1964 wildcat.... 401 ci .... the motor ran fine before i pulled it from a doner car , cleaned and did a few repairs and then installed in my car.... then it would not start.... some how the dist was missaligned even though i never touched it?????? i then pulled the dist. reset to fact spec. and the motor fired first try... is their a way to test for a vac leak of to see if the mech and vac advance are working properly???? thanks for the reply Todd:)

    Todd,
I would make sure all hoses to carb and distributer are in good shape and secure. We used to check for intake gasket leaks with a little oil squirter. With the engine running, squirt a little oil around where the intake gasket fits on the heads and at the base of the carb. It is a little messy, but if the oil is sucked in while the engine is running you will see oil disappear and will notice the engine smooth out for a second, this will identify where any leaks are in these areas.. I hope this helps. Keep us posted on your progress. Good luck Todd.

    finally fixed it!!!!!

:beer now i know why they called it a wildcat!!!!!after 3 years, many many late nights i went on my first road trip (400+ miles) and she purred like a kitten and roared like a lion!!!!..... the problem turned out to be the distr. there was a very poor connection from the vac advance plate to the ground .on the distr. and the mech. advance weights were a little corroded and sticking.
thanks again for all of the great help and responces.... todd
