My wife and I just bought a a 1962 Wildcat. I has a 401 with what seams to be a 401 rear main seal transmission leak. Can any tell me what you have to do to fix?
nice ride. take it to a old timer trans shop and see if it is the tranny, or the rear main seal of the engine. is the fluid red or oil. if it is red a tranny shop can replace the seal usually cork. if it is oil get a hold of doc on this board. i think you can drop the oil pan to get at the rear main seal. i am not a good mechanic or barely can spell one. jim
How big is the leak? You could try a Trans. sealant from your local auto parts store. If that doesn't stop the leak, I'd get the seals checked.
I added ATF to the transmission. My Dad gave the ATF to me do not think you can buy it any more. I also changed to oil and add some transmission fluid to the oil. That's an old gearhead trick to clean the inside of your motor and helps soften seals. I'll let you guys know if it helps. 62 pics http://www.interiorsbyshannon.com/62.html
Do not put aditives in your trans, when you put that stuff in, it makes all seals swell including the o'rings in the unit, front pump seal, tailshaft and more. Yes, it fixes the leak temporarily, but makes the seals so soft and rubbery, they will all start to leak. On a dynaflow in the 62, it might be the converter, as they use a large o'ring. Mine did this until I pulled the unit and resealed it. The best thing to do is if you gonna pull the unit, is to put in a T400 or a 700r4 4 speed for a update. then you can get more than 8 mpg in your Buick.
