I started to size the rings for my 401 today and have found that I need to grind about 3/8" off the compression rings just to get them to fit the bore. It's been 20 years since my last full motor build, but I never recall having rings that oversized. Is this normal for 401 rings??? I am wondering if I have correct rings or not. There is no ID on the package. Any help appreciated.

    Thanks
    Patrick

I have used file fit rings but that is too much. That is like chop and remeasure fit rings.
I think you need to get a new set.
Cutting that much off the rings will cause distortion when installed. They are not supposed to bend that much. It would be like selling universal fit rings-cut off at point 'A' for Ford, 'B' for Chevy, 'C' for Buick etc....

Sounds like the idiots sold you a set of 425 rings. :error: Send them back!

When you get the correct set, be sure the rings don't fit too tight in the piston groove.....particularly the top rings. That happened to me once, and I can't remember what brand of rings they were. :Dou: I think the spec is 1-2 thousandths.

I agree with Joe. I would bet my hat that they gave you 425 rings. They are an 1/8 in bigger, which sounds just about the amount you have over. Take them back ad tripple check them when thay give you the new parts.
