I picked up a 401 with a couple parts cars the other day and was wondering if you can id a 401 or 425 from the outside? I have heard that there is a boss on the block that you can use to tell the difference but dont know what I am looking for. Anyone know where I should be looking? Did they put different options on one but not the other such as aluminum valve covers or were these available from the dealer for all nailheads? It also came with a ST400 tranny that he said came out of his '66 'Lark. I didn't think they came with this tranny did they? I will clean up the block and get some #'s off that tonight and I'm sure that will tell me all I wanna know.

Here are some id codes. Be sure to click on the "Click here for more 425 information" right after the 1966 section it will give some details on where to look.

Any of those parts cars have a fan shroud for a '65 Wildcat?

Thanks for the info Rick. I checked the engine and it is a LR code so it looks like I have a '65 401. I also checked for the raised boss on the block and there wasn't one. As far as a fan shroud for your Wildcat, there was no engines in the cars so most everything under the hood is gone already. I will have to check back with the guy I got them from and see if he has any parts still and also because he had a couple '69 Skylarks "out back" that would look nice in my yard.
