I'm afraid there isn't a straight yes-or-no answer to that. It depends on what they mean by their reference to "400".

When the 401 was put in the 65 Skylark GS, Buick fibbed & called it a 400 to make it legal with GM's 400 ci limit for the intermediate body. In 1967, they released the new 400" engine which went on to be the basis for the 455. Totally different animal.

If they're referring to a 65 400", yeah, they should be the 401 parts. If they just say 400", I'd expect it them to be the newer style most likely.

I'm hardly a nailhead expert though - anyone have a better answer for him?

Yep - what Greg said - 401 was called a 400 when installed in Skylark GS because of GM rules on engine sizes in intermediates.

Try TA Performance for the headers, and they also carry a line of Nailhead cams. They just don't have them listed in the paper catalog yet, or on the website. Kenne-Bell also still carries Nailhead cams. Or call Carmen Faso, listed in the sticky at the top of this forum.

A lot of the references to the 400 cid engine are for the '67, '68 and '69 400 cid Buick engine available in the GS and Sportwagon. That one is different from our Nailheads, and there are few interchangable parts. Make sure you are looking at 401-425 Nailhead parts from years 1964 through 1966.

    Good Luck!
