I have a 62 Buick Electra with the 401. It needs a new carb, the original is just worn out. Can anyone send me in the right direction? Would like to have one that will allow me to use the original air cleaner. HELP!!!

    Thanks,
    Wes

    Wes,
What is the original carburetor? Should be a Carter AFB. if so, the Edelbrock Performer series carbs are AFB clones. You can get them anywhere, Jegs or Summit Racing catalogs.

It's a Rochester, WG4 or something like that. That might be wrong for the carb because it's a model number for a 50's Wizard outboard!

It is possible that you have a Rochester 4GC. Does it look like this?

That's it! What's a good replacement for that?

Edelbrocks take a larger air cleaner opening like the q-jet size; carters and the Rochester 4GC have a smaller and unserviced (no aftermarket) air cleaner opening.
I recommend calling Carmen Faso and getting his advice, maybe change to a rebuilt Carter. He is one of our Nailhead Gurus, call only at 716-693-4090

As Ted says if you use the Edelbrock your air cleaner will not fit. The http://www.buicks.net/shop/reference/carburetor_numbers.shtml website says your model 4800 uses a Rochester 4GC number 7013044, 7015040, 7019040, 7020040, 7023040. Carmen may be able to help you with this if you have the numbers. Or maybe check in Hemmings.

Call Old Carb Doctor. Jeff Dreibus 1800 945 CARB. He can rebuild it to new condition, and will replace any of the hard parts that are worn. His workmanship is outstanding.

    Good Luck,

My '63 Riviera originally came with the 4GC, but I replaced it with an OEM AFB some time ago. Easier to tune, easier to rebuild, and there are no gaskets below the float bowl - i.e. NO LEAKS. Any AFB from a 63 or earlier will work fine for you. I tried an aftermarket Edlebrock and Carter 9000 Series AFB but neither will operate the kickdown on the dynaflow. Find one on ebay and have it rebuilt or try www.thecarburetorshop.com in Eldon, MO for a replacement or kit. Here's a link of carbs for sale by application. http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Carbsaleapplication.htm There's an AFB S3297 for a '62 on the list.
