Hi Guys,I am out of town on business and don't have access to my literture and I have supposedly found a 66 GS.I am going to look at the car and need to know if the vin# indentifies a 66 as a GS or was GS a option for 66? Also I am not famaliar with the nailheads;how can I tell if car has a 401 from say a 300 or other nailhead? Car has badges but no GS hood and I want to detirmine if it is a real GS?T :THANKS FOR ANY HELP :TU:

Rusty,if no one replies to you soon I'll grad my manuals out of my storage unit tomorrow and look this information up for you.
By any chance do you have a VIN to post?

    Rusty,
The 66 gs has a specific vin that begins with 446. The hardtop is 446176, and the convertible is 446676. On the off chance you've hooked into a rare thin pillar coupe, the vin begins with 44607. Hope this helps. Keep us up to date.....Dan

On a Nailhead the distributor will be next to the firewall.

Hi Dan,Thanks for vin info;now if I understand you I can determine by vin if car is a real GS if it starts with 446;a skylark would start with 4-- the dashes would be something other than 46?. Ray I do not have a vin to post until I see the car.Now if anyone can tell me where enige code is located I can verify if car has 401.

Rusty, this post has pictures of engine codes, the pictures show the location. The code is on the top front of the block. In front of the Valley pan. Hope this helps.

Yes....in 1966, the GS became a new model, so the VIN will be 446xx if it's a GS. The Skylark was 443xx(V6) or 444xx(V8)
    The Special was 43xxx

Engine code could be MR for the standard 401
MU for the optional Q-jet option
    MS for hi-compression 401
Some MR's were mis-stamped MT, so check the vin.
Oh, and it should be red, not green!

    Same old story

Same old story;seller says car is a GS and when ya get there it's a Skylark. In this case a 444 skylark with the wrong GS emblems [67-72 style letters] added and car didn't even have a nailhead [ad said 401 V8] but had a 350 Buick motor. No telling how many "STAGE1" cars I have went to see that turned out to be only Skylarks [Not all bad because bought a few of them anyway] and a few really turned out to be real stage1's.

I guess the guy was hoping some sucker was coming out to look at the car, hopefully you put them in his place and told him to get rid of the GS emblems.

anyway keep looking, like you said there's always a diamond in the rough.

A Real GS car would have a full boxed convertable frame

The quickist way on a HT or Post car is to look under the car to see if it has the fully boxed convertable frame (all 4 sides, normally 3 sided for most cars). If someone clones a skylark or special closed car with the convertable they went through alot of work. Not impossible but not likely.

I went to see a 66 GS car in St. Louis Park MN last year and found a Skylark with the GS hood and correct square badges, but had the easy give aways such as the 3 sided frame and skylark ribbed potmetal cove panel under the trunk. GS cars will have the stainless trim like the Special DX but blacked out middle.

Under the Hood, the battery is on the left side of the car. Skylark will be on the right.

Nailheads are best noted for their vertical valve covers, valley cover and coolant bar that goes from radiator to heads - not into the intake manifold. At the Car Craft Summer Nationals last year I could not help the guy from Royle Purple that the intact had no water in it. They just did not understand!!!

Good Luck finding a real GS now days on the street. Best to work with some of the guys on this site to find known cars. But then again, the hunt for the rare find is so much fun. :beer
