I have an air cleaner that came from a car with a buick 401. The number is 6420861. It looks like the donor car must have been a mid 60s model but for some reason the exact number is not in my books. If you can assist me I would appreciate it. As soon as I can ID it I will post it for sale.
Re: 401 Air Cleaner ID Needed From my research this is the decal number for a 65 model. Since the piece appears to be original I am operating under the assumption that this is a 65 model cleaner. Is there any market for these?o No:
Re: 401 Air Cleaner ID Needed I'm interested in buying it from you. What kind of shape is it in?? Post a picture if you can....
Re: 401 Air Cleaner ID Needed Dan--I appreciate the inquiry but under V8 Board potocol I cannot sell off of this post. I will try to post a pic to verify what it is. Then I will try to get a feel for it in terms of price. I have no feel for pricing on for 65 parts. My experience is primarily with 70 parts. I will post it in the for sale section as soon as we ID it etc.
Re: 401 Air Cleaner ID Needed Jim, It looks like the one on my 64 Cat except my part # is 6422449. But I had a 63 base that looked the same but wouldnt fit. I did a stupid thing and had it on the ground and the car rolled over the air horn:af: and they are hard to straighten. Gary
Re: 401 Air Cleaner ID Needed Gary After I posted I realized that the number I referenced is the decal part number which is for a 65. Maybe they used the same cleaner for more than one year? My own read of the parts books suggests that a 64 and and 65 model carry different numbers for the aircleaner housings.
Re: 401 Air Cleaner ID Needed I had 7 1966 Rivs and every one of them had air cleaners just like that on them....
Re: 401 Air Cleaner ID Needed I concur with Doc. This looks just like the one on my 66 Riv. The 66 would have the quadrajet. Would the 65 be fitted with a Carter? I've found that the opening for the carb is different between the two so the air cleaner housings are not always interchangeable.
Re: 401 Air Cleaner ID Needed I can measure the diameter of the opening to resolve this issue. Does anyone know the applicable diameters?
Re: 401 Air Cleaner ID Needed Jim, I measured the opening on my 66 Riv with Qjet. 5 1/8. I measured the opening on a housing I have from a non Qjet and it measures 4 1/4. If your housing is a Qjet housing I would be interested in it.
Re: 401 Air Cleaner ID Needed It looks like a generic stock aircleaner used on the 64-66 401 with an AFB. The Quad model looked the same but was a bigger unit, as I found out when I converted my 401 from the AFB to the Quadrajet.
Re: 401 Air Cleaner ID Needed This specs out closer to 4" than 5" in diameter so I am assuming it is for an AFB. I wish I could have helped you. I would love to find another home for it.
Re: 401 Air Cleaner ID Needed I've sold several of these over the past decade $20-$50 depending on condition. '64 is a little different than the '65-'66
