I want to purchase a 350 for a 1982 bonneville that I want to "play" with. I don't know what trans came in the car, but I have a 400 trans w/ 2200 stall in it. I want to get the car in the high to low 14s and be a daily driver. Is the 400 trans too big? Thanks for any advice.
How much do you want to "play" with it and what exactly does "play" mean to you? If you intend on just beating the crap out of it and having some fun, then maybe the extra strength of the 400 might be worth it. If you're going for ET's, then you might want to listen to Nick's post.
I am going for ET time. When I said "play" with, I was referring to building my first modified engine. What are the 400 transmissions good for? Performance builders told me to stay away from them!
350 trans i can t belive performance builders told you to stay away from the 400 but i think if your just looking for 14s the 350 will take it and the stall you have should fit the 350 too. the 350 has a better first gear than the 400 so it will get you out of the hole a little faster.i have a 350 in my car and has been behind a stock 430 big block and has held up to much beating on and still works fine after 9 years. but was fresh when i put in and has wave plates replace with regular steels and a shift kit which lays rubber into second on amost any kind of meduim acceloration.so build a stong motor and put some decent gears in rear and go run. :beer andy
