Without seeing the fuse we may never know what you have, but do try Radio Shack, or go to your local Auto Emporium (Kragans? (Grand Auto)) or a gas station and show them what you need.:Do No:

Looks like your standard fuse to me....

    Thanks

i went to kragens and a couple other auto places an no one had that low of an amperage. they had 7.5 as the lowest.

The one i need is a standard fuse block fuse 1 1/4 in long. I think the radio shack ones wouold fit but im not sure of the voltage on them??

Go ahead and use the Radio Crack fuses- the 250volts is a rating that has to do with arcing across the poles and other factors but as long as it is rated 4a you are fine.( however most automotive stuff is rated ~24 volts or so ) do a little research on different fuses, just cause it fits physically dont mean its right, and make sure your old one was just a plain ole 4a fuse, not a time delay or slow blo- the wire inside would probably look like a little coil if it were a slo blo. What did it power??
If you really get into a bind, solder a modern plastic fuse across the poles of your old 4-ampere one and your good too!

Thanks it powered the panel cluster lights and accessory gauges. I dont know what the inside of the fuse looked like since it blew pretty good and broke the glass :Do No:

If it actually broke the glass from the fuse popping you may have a bigger problem ( dead short ) somewhere upstream. A 4a fuse is small enough to not let enough current pass to damage your harness, so all should be good unless you do have a short. While you're at the 'shack buying several 4a fuses, invest~10/20 bucks on a multimeter with an amp feature. You subsitute your fuse with the meter leads with the meter on the proper setting, and you should probably see about ~3amps at a guess if all is good. If it goes way high-you have a short and its time to start tracing wires. ( the meter will be a great help here too, they are a wonderful tool that you will quickly learn how hard life was without it!)
Also check out Allelectronics.com and mouser.com for fuses and such-All sells decent meters at a better price with more features than the 'crack too.Good luck and don't be afraid to ask!!

I have a multimeter just need to find it. Thanks for the help. I can say that my alternatro blew out and then the fuse popped relitivley around the same time.

there is no voltage regulator. its internally regulated.
