Is the 364 nail head also considered a Wild Cat?? I brought a 61 lesabre with what I thought was a 364 but when i had the trunk unlocked i found an original wild cat air cleaner assembly. The previous owner said he replaced it with the existing Chrome assembly when he bought it in 2001. The only other owner was the original lady and I dont think she added it for style. Is there any way I can tell what type of engine it is. There is a stamping on the top that matches my vin number but cant find any other markings. any help would be appreciated. Thanks Jim

Yes, the 364 is a Wildcat engine.

www.buicks.net has info on engine stamping numbers, etc

In 1961 your model came with a 364 cid engine. "Wildcat" used in cooinection with an engine is not to be confused with Wildcat the model that started as an offspring of the Invicata in 1962 and ran through the 1970 model year. Also the number on an air cleaner for Buick engines of that vintage was for the torque rating of the engine in foot pounds and not the engines cid.

    Tanks for the info

There is no number on the air cleaner just the wild cat print. thanks for the info. as soon as i can get some jack stands ill check the rest of the block. from the buick site it seems that the numbers should be on the front of the engine below the heads. I can not find any numbers in that local Could they be any where else??

The 364 cid I am pretty sure was the only v8 engine offerred in the 61 LeSabre. Look for "3H" on the front of the block just under where the heads mates.

if you look behind the water crossover themostat housing in front of the valley cover you'll find the id #, you might have to wipe away some crud .

    good luck
