350 tuning

    hi guys picked up a 71 skylark custom 350 4- barrel today. here's what i know the motor was rebuilt 1.5 years ago but hasn't really been driven much since the last owner bought a new carb from napa and also a points dist i don't believe this guy touched either after he put them in he lost interest i guess can some one tell me what the points are supposed to be set at and any recommendations with the carb would be appreciated i am going to part the car out and i would like to know how the motor runs when right. thanks everybody

    The points need to be set at 30 degrees with a dwellmeter, then set your timing ( I like about 5 degrees more than the factory recommends). Run the idle mixture screws in all the way (not too hard) then back out 2 and a half turns, then keep turning about a half a round out at a time until you get the fastest idle, then adjust engine speed (throttle screw) to about 700 rpm. There are many other ways of doing this, it should get you in the ballpark.
