Question regarding a head job and cam swap? As I want torque as much as horsepower any recommendations on specifically what kind of cam to use over stock if any and what kind of porting to the heads??

From what I see and read it looks like the TA 212 with ported heads would be better fit for my 71 motor which has lower compression to begin with than a 70. That said, how much of an improvement over a stock would the above be?

Here is a good thread about a TA212 cammed 350 with ported heads:

TA recommended set up for top end rebuild with stock heads ported

    TA 284 cam
    TA 1405 lifters
    Cam lube
    TA 1235 intake manifold
    Edelbrock 600 cfm carb
    TA 1246 spacer plate
TA 1521B timing set 3 gear, 4 degree

Was told should give me approximately 75 hp more

The 284 cam is fine, the TA intake is lighter than stock however will not give you much if any power, the 600 E-brock will choke the performance down. The stock 350 can suck down 750 cfm from the stock carb so why under carb it?

A rebuild on your Q jet would be best and give better fuel milage.

TA advised that anything greater than 700 cfm was a waste. My old school tool man actual likes the 670 Holley over the Qjet, in combination with ported heads, stock manifold and cam. Seems there's an awful lot of difference in options and opinions. Was hoping someone had tried the TA set up mentioned for some real life feedback.

Sean, just trying to sort all this out. TA's website claims a 15-35 hp gain and you say almost nothing.

The 350 Buick engine has a surprising amount of performance potential, but it has been hampered by the lack of a high performance intake manifold. TA Performance Products solved the problem when we introduced our very first product in 1983... the Stage One, aluminum dual plane intake manifold for the '68- '81 Buick 350 Engines.

Since it's inception, the TA Stage 1 manifold has been a perfect compliment to street and strip combination's by giving a substantial increase in engine efficiency and economy through it's proven dual plane runner design. The TA manifold maintains excellent low speed and mid-range torque for optimum drivebility, yet increases top end power as well. For maximum versatility the manifold is machined to accept Quadrajet and other spread bore carburetors, or square bore carburetors such as the Holley, Edelbrock, or Demon. When bolted on, this manifold will actually increase the air flow by 5% at .300" valve lift and 2.3% at .600" valve lift over the head alone. This light weight manifold (16 lbs) will give the Buick 350 a 15-35 HP increase, and improve torque and power from 0-6500 RPM all while reducing engine weight by 40 lbs.

OK, who am I to believe?:Do No:

Recently another member bought a 600 cfm e brock and TA intake and I told him to upgrade.... The results:

Some track proof of the larger carbs performing better on a 350:

I have also done dyno testing that showed the 600 cfm carb about 30 hp down from a 850 cfm carb...

Some people have reported gains with the TA intake however I have never seen any proof... The intake is lighter, and has the dual boltpattern for either spreadbore or squarebore carbs which is good if you care. You will not be able to run the divorved choke from the stock q jet btw.

I spoke to a guy running inthe 11s NA and they run the Q jet and stock intake... They tried the TA intake and re jetted the carb, and still lost time in the quarter.

Bill M used a ported stock intake on his 1021 hp 350, I wonder why he did not use the TA intake?

    Good info Sean!

Just looking to get the best bang for the buck without buying into any hype. If my rebuilt Qjet wasn't so fickle I probably wouldn't even consider the manifold/carb swap.

Then buy the 770 cfm that was refered to you in the other thread... Keep in mind the q jet will get the best fuel milage compared to the other carbs if tuned right.

    Thanks,

In searching around I found a great deal on a rebuilt Qjet if I choose to go that route and keep the same CFM. Was told by the re builder that once you get any corrosion in the Qjet (which is true in my case) you will have many of the issues I have experienced. They (rebuild company) won't even except my carb for its core if it has any internal corrosion!

Now is this Q jet from a Buick 350? Hopefully, because if not it will need mods to work right with your 350.

Yes it is. Its from a company called National Carburetors. Their website (same name) has a search engine for the year specific QJET carb applications for Buicks as well as other carbs. I called them as well to confirm the application (ND 4280). Have you ever heard of them??
