    hi everyone,

i have a 70 gs with a 350....about every 10 days or so i am down about 2 quarts of oil...i took it to two mechanics who say the oil is not coming from the motor...they checked the rear main and said they let it run for 1/2 hour and not a drop there.....the starter is covered in oil however, nothing coming from valve covers...does anyone know a mechanic in massachusetts that can take this car and fix it...please, somebody has to know what is going on...

If oil is on top of the starter, you have a leak from the valve covers. A 2 qt loss is a massive leak. Best bet is to pressure wash the engine and use some Castrol SuperClean to remove all oil/grease residue. Once you run the engine after the cleaning, you will see where it is leaking. I would suggest you use FelPro rubber valve cover gaskets and not the "el cheapo" cork gaskets.

    George,
Thank you, I will try that tomorrow but like I said, we could not see anything there...I will pressure wash the motor and clean it and let you know how I make out....Either way I will change the gaskets and see if that helps..
    Thanks,
    Steve

    valve guides and/or seals ?
i had a 710 datsun (pos), new in 1975 that after 25000 miles , used a quart of oil a week . it needed valve seals . sold the car before making repairs .

With worn/missing valve stem seals or worn guides, you will get a "puff" of smoke upon start up or after shutting down the engine and restarting 10-15 minutes later. Also, with bad valve stem seals, you will also have fouled plugs due to oil contamination.
