350 dip stick question

Discussion in 'Small Block Tech' started by SoberCollege68, Apr 12, 2010.

  1. I have my 350 installed. I put the correct amount of oil in it but my dipstick is broken. My boss bought me a new one but it seems to be way to long. Doe anyone know what the proper length of the dipstick is inside the engine or where you can buy a dip stick for a 350 buick.

    Thanks

    What year engine?
They differ. Some have an extension tube inserted into the block, thinking '72.
My '71 has the dipstick directly into the block.

If you have power steering, it should be a 2 piece tube.

    Carl,
I'm still on the learning curve after 8 years with my '71.
Dipstick & tube set-ups were different but more than I realized.
With reference to only the 350 engine here's what I found.
    1234632 fits 70-71 - with PB - with rod adaptor/SUP 1384609
    1381751 fits 68-71 - except rod adaptor.
    1240523 fits 72-All/SUP 1234639

Looks like they extended the rod for a PB car making it easier to find/reach in the area of the booster. Mine was manual brakes when I bought it & still has the short dipstick & no tube.
Another small chore for another day will be to locate one for the car which now has power disc.
    Details, details,details!

  6. its a 68, the dipstick goes directly into the block toward the bottom, it has power brakes and a/c

    68 & 69 350 with PB takes a # 1234632. Same part # on a '68 400 V8 or a '67
435 car CAN. or 446 with PB or DB.
    435 is a Special Deluxe 6 cyl., 446 is a GS 400.
No idea about the CAN. Canadian cars were different in some way?

    gscalifornia Small blocks rule!!

Then you're missing the short extension tube that goes into the block. You have the correct dipstick, you just need the tube.

Just another example of the differences between a chevy 350 and a buick 350. Not even the dipsticks are interchangeable. Find a local wrecking yard and see if you can find yourself a buick 350 to get a dipstick from.
