My 72 skylark keeps bogging in the drive position, it wont get up and go when i floor the gas pedal. In low 1 and 2 it tears up the road it only bogs in drive, any thought. Engine is a 350 4 brl, 350 tranny, and carb is a holley 600 cfm vacuum secondary.

We need more info, is it stock inside? Have you changed anything resulting in this problem? I bet it's a badly set up carb or timing.

    Well,
If your kickdown cable on the trans isn't hooked up, the trans won't downshift from 3rd to 2nd, or down to 1st. That will make it bog, especially from low speed in high gear. The cable runs from the passenger front side of the trans(above the pan flange) to the gas pedal. The cable end at the gas pedal typically breaks, resulting in no downshift.

    bogging

the engine is a stock 69 350, the kickdown is hooked up to the gas pedal that is what i first thought it was and it might still be if its not working correctly, the second thing i was thinking the carb needs some fine tunning, but im am no mechanic by any means lol, the timing is on the money.

Sounds like a combination of things, start with the carb.

Is the transmission downshifting from 3-2 and 3-1, when you mash it? You should be able to tell if it is downshifting. On the carb side, the most common cause for a bog on the Q-jet is a defective vacuum break on the front passenger side of the carb. Start the engine, and with it running at idle speed, try to push in the 2 airvalves on top of the secondary throttle bores. If you can, the vacuum break is defective or the linkage to the airvalves is missing. The vacuum break holds the airvalves closed, and gradually allows them to open when you go to WOT. If they flop in, you get a bog.

I heard a trick the other day. Stick a paper clip under the secondary rod hanger. This brings the rods up just a tad but curse the bog for most people. as they are already open a tad. Might not be the right way but I heard it works.

My '71 used to do that.........after rebuilding the carb, and nearly everything else imaginable, I found that when I advanced the timing about 6 degrees the hesitation went away. It seemed to do it more when it was cold, but this fix worked great and the car got better mileage and more power and never pinged afterwards. My thought was that maybe the timing chain was stretched?:bglasses:

Ooops, I missed that. OK, since it is a vacuum secondary carb, I would look at secondaries coming in too soon, or not soon enough. Aren't there different springs that change that. I'm not that familiar with Holleys. I will say one thing though. Buicks like big carbs. If the factory equipped the 350 with a 750 CFM carburetor, why put a 600 CFM carb on it? You can get a good Q-jet anywhere, and have it rebuilt. They may not ultimately make the car as fast as a big holley, but for street/strip cars, they are the best choice IMHO

    thanks

Thanks for all the help im going to see about investing in a new carb. I'm pretty sure it may be the tranny though it seem like it shifts into the next gear way to soon and dont kick down when you try to punch it.

    Thanks
    Rich

  14. sounds like the tranny governer is sticking. this will cause the tranny to try to start out in 2nd or 3rd gear rather than starting out in low. the fact that you can manually put the selector in low and it works fine may be an indicator of this . Bob
