Well, I finally got my 67 GS California, and its cool. Not running, no brakes, and trashed interior, but its cool. I never thought of this till I looked at the engine,(340-4) but it has all that emmisions stuff still on it! Air pump, all rubber lines, valves, steel lines to the heads, even most of the hose clamps are the original style. What does this air injection accomplish? These ports in the heads-I wonder if fuel injectors could go in there? Nitrous? Propane? Should I just take all the stuff off and get on with it? Thanks,
What are you going to do with the car? Ted, What are you going to do with the car? If you are going to keep the car orginal I would not change anything. I would think about it before you remove the smog unit. How many 67 GS Californias did they make? What is it worth restored? I don't know that much about '67's. Is it a GS 340? A guy that lives over by me has a '67 GS 340 and said only 1,500 were made in his combo. I think there was 2 different color combos. But I don't know anything about the '67 GS California. I saw on eBay someone selling a smog unit and it was bringing some good money. I don't remember exactly what GM model it was. Good Luck Jerseysky66 (Bob) 1966 Skylark Wildcat 375
Closed Smog Pump Auctions Here is some examples of the value for these systems. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=34202&item=2446585257 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33632&item=2445940138 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33632&item=2445972166 I know they are Chevy not Buick. I could not find any Buick systems. Which I think make it more rare. But like I said I am not an expert. I hope this helps you decide. Good Luck. Jerseysky66 (Bob) 1966 Skylark Wildcat 375
The California GS is based off the Special 2dr post. I think it was a dealer installed option, i.e. Hood Scoops and emblems.
Air pumps cause few problems and cost almost no horsepower. Biggest issues are rusted pipes and check valves, or defective diverter valves which cause backfiring. If that stuff is in good shape, KEEP IT. The pump itself should be available as a rebuilt, and probably very reasonably priced. Since the air is injected into the exhaust stream, I don't think you want to inject fuel there.
The Air Injection Reactor Systems function is to increase the amount of oxygen on the exhaust side of the exhaust valve. This increases the rate of combustion of the excess hydrocarbons and also changes most of the carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide.
That would be COOL Flame comin' outa the stack! I will keep the car original, so the smogulator will stay on it. There is one of these for sale on the buickclub.org board for 15000 and he has a lot to say about the cars. Interesting thing is that it was not a dealer installed thing, they were assembled at the Freemont plant. They were Special Post Coupes-on the serial # they were 433XXX but the cowl tag is 434XXX. I was interested in the frame, because it is NOT boxed. The front clip is GS, emblems are GS, but frame and interior are Special. Pretty funky. I am interested in the weight, it should be lighter than the production GS 340. I'll find the link to that car for sale. Thanks for all the info-
http://www.clubmud.net/67buick/index.html Hope this link works, 67 GS CA. Note caowl tag and VIN difference.
Pretty Basic Its got the basic Special trim interior-vinyl bench, no armrest, column shift. I need the whole interior-someday. Right now I would like to get the brakes working (manual) and get it started to get tags and stuff. Then I have to get back to working on project #1, the Wildcat.
