Will a 350 Buick distributor work in a 340 Buick ? If not, are there kits to rebuild a 340 distributor ? On a dwell meter, at idle the dwell is jumping around almost a point above what it should be set at. Under slight acceleration the motor begins detonating. Thought I would start with the distributor to try to fix this problem. Thanks
Yes Dwell should be 30* If it is jumping around then likely the spring is old and the points need to be replaced. FYI, the smaller the number the wider the gap and the bigger the number the smaller the gap.
checked at constant 'parked' idle: set dwell at 30* and meter jumped to 31* a few times. removed vaccum advance and plugged it... again dwell was jumping Replace points (with original set) again same symptoms Begin thottling up motor and dwell began to jump from 29* to 31-32* Used different dwell meter and performed all of the above test with same results.
My guess would be wear in the distributor. Maybe a worn cam that has a low lobe causing the points not to open as far. I am not sure if this part is replacable or not. Recommend replacing the distributor, but it wil most likely run ok on the street for now.
My advice is to just bring me the car to work on .......unless you cant get it away from your wooooman.....:spank: :Brow:
340's with the 10.25 CR tend to detonate. I've tried to stop mine form pinging for over 20 years. Had advice from every Buick guru I could talk with. Just live with it and run a racing fuel mix.
