What is the minimum compression for the 308s cam from TA? I'm putting together a 462 with Ross 11.0:1 with valve reliefs. What kind of head flow #'s do you need to run this big of a solid? The other two that I'm considering is the 210s-HL and 284-96F. I plan on running a KB Wildcat with a Holley 950HP, MSD distributor with 6AL, converted stage 1 heads with street/strip porting(maybe more) TH400, 4000 stall, 3.73 posi. What will I need to go 11.20 or better?

    gotbuick What, me worry?

Your question is kind of wide, i.e. heads, tranny, etc. The 308s has alot of valve overlap, so 11:1 compression is no problem. I think this is a good place to start. :)

My goal is high 10's to 11.20 on race gas but pump gas on the street. I don't mind race gas at the track, but would prefer pump gas to get around. I plan on driving to a cruise on the Mississippi Coast in the fall that is about 2 1/5 hours away. I guess only a clean up pass on the block and heads would be neccessary as to not raise compression too much. I also plan on Orange Crush head gaskets. I don't think I'll have a problem with running pump gas with alluminum heads with 11.0:1 compression. I guess I'm curious to know what needs to be done to iron heads to dip into the 10's and which of the three cam that I listed will get me there. The reason why I'm skeptical on the 308s is that it seems to be alot of cam for an 11.0:1 motor. Everyone that I've noticed that is running one seems to have more compression. What other info on the combo do you need to know? Some things I haven't bought yet but plan on doing so.

Reynold, the 308S cam is a great old design cam. This cam loves 12.5:1 or more compression. Youre ported iron heads combination has the potential to make 550+HP and with out of the box Street Elim heads should make 620+HP.

If a 308s likes 12.5:1 I'd probably be too lite in compression to run that one. Which one would you recommend? And what flow #'s should I have to get there? The cams I listed are ones that I like but don't know what kind of flow #'s I need to make them work.

    I had 9.6 to 1 in a 430 w/ the 308s that went 11.40's all the time w/ a best of 11.26 @116mph in a 3500+ '70 'Lark.
Car worked well (High 1.4 60's) but had junk iron heads and only an 800 Holley.
I've never seen anything but good from that cam

Those are inspiring numbers. I'm still acquiring parts at the moment, but want to make sure that I gather all the right stuff. All the Chubby guys laugh or grin at me when we talk about Buicks. There are a group of Olds guys that live near me that I've known for quite a long time. We go to a local cruise nite every Thursday nite. They all understand Buick torque and power. When my car gets out of my garage from resto, I want to be ready to "enlighten" those Chubby guys. I'm dyin' to run 10's on a pump gas motor. The only variable right now is the heads. I desparately want stage 2's, but need to liquidate some "toys" around the house first.(Wife's law!)Everytime those Chubby guys start crap with me about Buicks, I just pull out an old piston. There's no come back when "your's is BIGGER than their's!"

Nothing is more fun then to bust some chebby a$$*ole who mocks buicks. They sure change there tune when I bring the 69' around. It's been down for a long time getting a new motor and still needs paint. Now it's been updated with ported stage2 heads and stage1+ 11/32 stim valves, dominator and block girdle. My chevy freinds are starting to say things like, 'That things a monster' or 'Can't wait to see the wheel stands'. Sure can turn on a dime when they know stage2 power is coming thier way.:beer

I only wish I had gone your route and had streetable 11-11.5:1. I'm at 13:1 right now and the motor is done.

My 12.5:1 stage2 engine is very streetable, I drive it 30 miles 1 way to the race track, race and drive it back home. The engine is actually better on gas(mpg) than it was when it was 10:1(compression). But it needs to be at $4.50 a gallon.

I just called a friend of mine with an Olds 425. He's running a nasty solid that sounds great, streetable and runs good. He said his specs are 274*i, 288*e at .050 and .630ish I, 638 E. The first time we went to the track with it, it went 11.50. He has an Olds 455 balancer on it so the marks were wrong and he only had 24* total advance. His mph was 117. Judging by some mphs I've seen, he should be in the 11.20's - teens with tuning. He's pumping 12.0:1 but alluminum heads and cutting it back with the cam. I'm feeling much better about the 308s now. (the beer is helping too!):Brow: :beer Still gettin' my poop together though before I hit the machine shop.
