    300 engine

I finally detailed my engine this summer but wasn't happy with the rest if the compartment. As you can see (sorta), I have the inner fenderwell off as well as the steering column and power brake booster. Gotta take off as much as you can to get it right. I wish I had the time to pull the engine but... it's a driver, not a show car. Have fun!

Here's the 300 in my '66 Special. It only had 53,000 miles at the time, so it just got pulled and repainted Buick red. Also added a '64 alum 4bbl intake, and 340 valve covers. Next step is to install a manual trans setup. :3gears:

These pics are a little dated. You have to envision this compartment with headers and not the boring manifolds!

Walt - did the 340 Valve Covers fit without modification to the heads? I would love to replace with some new covers.

    Thanks!!

    Thanks for the comments guys!
The 340 valve covers fit the 300 just fine.....they do give a cleaner look, don't they?
    :TU:
The alum '64 intake does have smaller ports than the '65-67 iron heads. They're about 1/8" shorter (not as tall).... I did open the ports in the manifold up a bit with a die grinder, so they match pretty well. There are also exhaust passages in the '66 heads that had to be plugged to use the alum manifold. And there are some differences in water passages or outlets, but I don't recall the specifics. For the finishing touch, I smoothed the exterior of the manifold using sanding rolls before bead blasting. I picked up the manifold at Carlisle for $35 (that's 1998 dollars!), so I didn't have much to lose....
As for the 'Red' engine.....well, Buick painted the 401 in the GS red, instead of green, So I did the same with my 'Special'. Besides, green clashes with a red car!
Performance is okay...the 2.78 rear doesn't help. A manual trans and better rear gears are planned.....just need a 300 flywheel to finish....anybody have one for sale?
    Later!

    300 question

How did you block the exhaust passapges and could you be a little more specific as to what water outlets are diffrent I am planning on putting on a aluminum intake on my 66 300 this winter

    thanks Adam

    My Old '64

Here's a shot of the 300 I had in my '64 Skylark (before I sold it). It's a ported 4-barrel engine with a 600cfm Carter AFB. The air cleaner came on a '65 2-bbl engine. I like it because it has a straight snout. I used an aftermarket 4-bbl intake base because I couldn't find an OEM piece. The valve covers came from a '66 300. I liked the contemporary look. The decals came from YearOne. They're not correct for the year of the engine, but it helped to explain the engine at cruise nights. The front cover is a TA piece, which actually comes from a 350. A note of caution here, they say the timing marks are the same as a 300, but they're actually off just enough to cause minor timing inaccuracies. The early cast-in timing tabs are much cooler and more accurate. However, due to the great blueprint job TA does, I had to work at getting the oil pressure below 65# at cold idle. I currently have a '65 cast iron motor that will undergo a full rebuild starting this winter. Plan is to install 1.425" exhaust valves from the 225 OF V-6, mild Crower cam and a Val Hedworth Edelbrock Performer on a ported intake. Nothing wild, just enough to pull a '63 or '65 Skylark/Special along.

    Ponch,
You can not run the aluminum intake with the cast heads. The aluminum intake must be used with the aluminum heads and cast intake with cast heads. The water passages are different and I think the bolt pattern is ever so slightly different. I also know from experience that the head bolt lengths are not the same.
