sorry for the long tread. i just removed my 65 skylarks front cover to repair the fuel pump threads, so i decided to do a timing chain and an oil pump also since i was there. no issues with the chain or the heli-coiled thread repair. now i used a melling high volume pump and the booster plate. the pump housing had some scores in it and the filter adapter had some marks. so i in stalled the new gears, put the h.v. plate in place, installed the spacer shim material which fit really tight. drilled my holes, all seems fine. i used the matching gaskets that come with the kit, add the booster plate and lube it up. i noticed that when turning by hand that it isn't perfectly smooth rotating, it seems to be contacting somewhere. so i take it apart and all looks ok, i did notice that it wasn't contantly rubbing, almost like it has a slightly bent gear. i was able to spin it with a drill on the bench, took it apart and no rub marks? the shims for spacing the h.v. plate seem tight in some areas, also noticed that there isn't any up and down play in the gear? i put the front cover on the motor packed with vaseline and spun it up with a drill, it still isn't smooth, it doesn't bind but not smooth. has anyone else ran into this with a melling pump? i have done a few before on 350's and 455's w/ out an issue. any info will be helpful. thanks, paul c.

i used a melling pump kit and a steel plate to make up for the marks on the filter housing. Have had zero issues thus far. 340
