In a few weeks, when my kitchen's done, I'm going to tear the intake off my '65 300-4V. I've been chasing an exhaust leak sound for 9 years, and I have a gut feeling (which is probably wrong) that one of the exhaust crossover passages may be leaking. I've never even had the valve covers off this thing in 9 years, so does anyone have any installation tips for the intake? I plan on putting orange RTV around the crossover passages, and some black gasket sealer on the oil seals and the coolant passages. Any insight would be great...thanks!

I use the "the right stuff" gasket sealant it works GREAT! Be sure to use some (or RTV) on the corners of the rubber where it meets to the heads. I also use it on the coolant ports both on the intake and the head surfaces but only a little thin skim not much. Some people prefer to use just sealant instead of the rubber peices, I like the rubber. I also only torque the bolts to about 20 foot pounds, let the Sealant cure overnight then torque to spec the next day. Otherwise I find the rubber parts spit out the back. Just how I do it but it works well.

if you have a friend to help, it is a good idea so you can mount the intake perfectly the first time without any issues. They are a bit heavy and tricky to drop on perfectly.

Also remember to clean all the bolts and chase the threads in the heads where the intake bolts go. If you skip this step you will not get proper torque readings on the torque wrench due to the bind in the threads... Also use some engine oil on the intake bolts before install.

Be sure to torque the intake to spec and in the right sequence.

Aaron, on the passenger side of the intake there's a slotted bolt hole. Also an intake bolt with a washer head on it. Screw that bolt in a bit, slide the intake under the washer till it bottoms then drop the intake on the rest of the way. Make sure it's lateral with the engine before the drop tho.

    Good tip! Thanks Ponch!

Unfortunately, this is getting to be a back burner project...My Mustang has a phantom misfire that I've thrown the book at, so that's second, after the kitchen remodel. Phew. Stuff sure gets in the way sometimes!

I think EVERYONE can relate to the "stuff getting in the way" deal....

Hang in there.... And feel free to ask about your Stang issues on the Bench we might be able to help.
