Would anyone know what the stock cam specs for a '65 3004V engine would be? Also interested in valve sizes if anyone knows what size they are! I have a buddy with a desktop dyno and just want to play around with it a little, any other info would also be appreciated. Also for those lucky ones who have a set of poston headers for a 300, would there be any chance of seeing a picture of them? I imagine I will just end up jet coating my factory manifolds, but am interested in seeing a real header for these engines. Thanks:TU:
The factory specs for the CAM are available here: http://www.nhra.com/tech_specs/classification/index.html#buick The valve sizes are also available at the above link as well as casting numbers, deck clearance & carb info. I noticed they have all of their documents in Excel, so here are the numbers in case you don't have Excel: Valve Intake: 1.818" Valve Exhaust: 1.380" Cam: 394/401 Head CC: 51.12 Compression: 10.25:1
Thanks for the reply and the photo! They look like some nice fitting headers. Your engine bay looks nice neat and clean, something I hope mine turns out like! Where did you get the paint for your engine? It looks good. Has anyone tried putting larger valves in one of these engines or is there enough room to do this? I'm not to the engine stage yet but thought I would fish for some ideas!
This is the POR brand paint (the same guys who make the POR15) - Buick Green. To get the engine compartment clean I spent a lot of time pressure washing, degreasing, pressure washing again - having the engine removed makes it a lot easier. I repainted everything before putting the engine back in as well.
Well thats some usefull info. I didn't know that POR made different colours like that! My uncle has been totally satisfied with the POR he used on his 1953 150 2 door chev. He been really after me to use it on my frame and suspension, but I think I'm going to go the two part epoxy route. Are those headers and equal length set-up? And would you know what the pipe diameter is?
They are 1 5/8" tube into a 3" collector. They're full length headers & yes they are equal length or "tuned" I guess it's called. They are setup to work on a auto trans...I had to have them slightly modified to work with the clutch linkage since I installed a 4 speed. Number 7 cylinder tube was originally in the way. They were originally from Postons...but I didn't purchase them from Poston's - I put a few want ads online & got an email one day from someone who never installed them & sold them to me (new in the box). I called Poston's before this & they said the last 50 they had made took them over a year to sell, so unless you can gather 50 people together who want these, Poston's wont be carrying them again!
I noticed on a seperate thread on this board http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8286&highlight=300+heads Someone attached a picture of some big bore cast exhaust manifolds available from the UK from www.jeengineering.com. Looks like 320 UK (somewhere around $500 US plus shipping). These sure do look more expansive than the stock manifolds though.
Well I guess I'm running out of options for a header set up, Poston has given up on them and those off shore units are pretty rich! One last option would be to build a set. Headersbyed.com has a pretty neat site on whats involved. I guess where there's a will there's a way! About that other link you provided one fellow asked if a 340 head would work on a 300. Does anyone know if this is possible or not? I pulled the head off of my 300 today just to see if there was room for larger valves or not, the valves that are in there are as big as it will ever get, its pretty tight.
