I was wondering if anyone made a kit or a distrbutor to get rid of the points in a 65 skylark 300. I searched the web and didnt see anything.

You have a few options open to you. Conversion kits are available from Mallory (Unilite) and Pertronix (Ignitor), you could send your existing distrib to Dave (IgnitionMan) for one of his small-body HEI conversions, or you can just swap in a GM HEI from a 350" Buick. Which you do depends primarily on the "look" you want when finished and how much you're willing to spend.

Potentially the cheapest option is the HEI swap. I did this on my '65 300 since I had all the parts. No real problems. The stock wiring to the coil doesn't give the full 12v needed to run the HEI, but it'll run a relay quite nicely. :) Just run a new full 12v source thru the relay to the HEI & you're set. I admit mine was a 'junkyard' swap, but I just used an extra horn relay & bolted it to the intake right where the coil had been. Never gave me any trouble. I may have had to clearance the cap a little to clear the head/intake; don't remember for sure. Cheap, but nothing stock looking about it. Also, if you don't already have the parts or access to them cheap, by the time you buy the distributor, matching plug wires, relay, wires, etc., the conversion kits aren't a bad value anymore...

If you want a stock look to the swap or willing to spend a little more, you're better off with one of the conversion kits. They hide everything under the stock cap. There's some question to the reliability of the Pertronix unit, but I haven't seen anything negative on the one from Mallory.

If you'd like what'll pass as stock for the typically ignorant onlooker, but want dead-on reliability, Dave's conversion is a great option. Basically, it mounts the HEI module under the stock small distrib body. I have to admit I don't know his prices, I just expect it'll be a little more considering the product.

Thanks for the help. I think I will contact the ignitionman and see what he charges.
