Out of curiosity what would be the optimum way to hook up the center speaker in conjunction with the rear speakers on an aftermarket stereo? I would imagine if you hook it up to either the left or the right it would create a bias. I would like to experiment with it as it would be nice having some sound in the front of the car without cutting holes in my kick panels or door panels. (And I like the vents too much to buy aftermarket kick panels)

There is an aftermarket twin speaker system that fits in that center dash location. I have one installed that I bought ages ago. The "separation" is not very good but it is stereo.

Or you can use the kick panels that have speakers in them. I forget who offers them.

Are you going with a stock interior? If so then.....................
Exactly what he said...I'd like to hear the kick panel speakers before buying. I have concerns re: placement and low midrange performace.

BadBrad- If you can remember the name of that twin system, I am very interested in trying to find it.

I have the kick panel speakers, but with the top down, I can't hear them all that well- I was trying to figure out how to get some of the high freq set up in the center speaker location.

Being a convertible, I don't have rear speakers. :Do No:

You can make a speaker box with a disconnet wire that sits on your back seat - then you can just unplug and remove it when you want and retain the stock look.

I would like to try that dual speaker, I know I won't get perfect sound but what I am aiming for is just at least some sound to come from the front of the car. As for kick panel speakers I like the idea, but if you go with those you loose the open air vents although I hear some setups allow you to keep the cable for the top vent in which case that would be perfect. A speaker box is a cool idea but I keep so much stuff in my car there would be no room in the back seat:( I have always wanted to make a speaker box to fit underneath the front seat but there is just not enough room under there and my springs are worn so all it takes is one careless plop on the seat and the box could break. As far as volume goes when I have more money I will upgrade the head unit and the rear speakers and that is where I expect most of the volume to come from. The front speaker is a 6x9 correct?

The front speaker is more like a 4 X 10.

I had a Valiant with a single speaker in the front. I cut a piece of aluminum plate the size of the original speaker(6x9), then got two small speakers and installed them into the plate. Then I just bolted the new plate where the old speaker was. It sounded good with two 6x9s in the hat rack. I will probably do the same for my Skylark. The aluminum I used was from an old street sign and I think the speakers were 3 1/2" 2-way speakers, the biggest I could fit.

That is what I have. I added bass blockers that block out 800Hz and down. Those little 3 1/2's will have a hard time with bass. They will sound much cleaner if you block out the low bass frequencies.

Yes, you will need the low frequency blockers on 3 1/2" speakers. Luckily the speakers I purchased came with the blockers. They were Infinity Kappa, I got them on sale for about $25.00/pair.

My front speaker solution, like dylan, was to take the orig. spkr. mounting plate, cut the opening larger, and then cut a 20. ga. metal plate with 2 holes for a pair of 4" polk audio spkrs. They just fit. I bent a 3/4" leg on the interior long side and ends of the plate so the speakers are tilted towards you. also tacked a baffle down the center for separation (don't know if it will help) I am now trying to find the solution for the right and left by the doors. I'm leaning towards the air control vent space. Car's a conv. in So Cal so if i get hot the top'll just go down. I'm trying to figure out a new way to run the control cable that will allow me to at least partially open the vent. 5"x7" spkrs. will just fit the space. Thinking of building a new kick panel that sticks out just a little and angles the speaker towards the seats. And the orig. vent grills will cover. What is the bass blocker? Hadn't heard of that. Some time ago, i saw a post where the rear seat speakers were mounted to the tops of the rear seat in a conv. Would love to know how the mounting brackets work! Rick

    Leon,
Google three channel stereo. You will find that you can use your existing dash speaker, with no mods to anything else, as a center speaker to fill in sound. Some older songs such as Spinning Wheel, by Blood Sweat and Tears, were actually recorded as enhanced third channel which gave you music from the left and right and voice from the center.

    Have fun and Merry Christmas

use a set of 4" for the center. I plan on doing kick panels in the wagon. however I plan on custom building them. Aiming them for optimal sound.

I bought the dual front speaker for my 70 from Year One. It mounted where the factory speaker was in the dash. Not the best sound but a good idea when combined with other speakers. I believe Couston Auto Sound made those but that was about 8-10 years ago. The part number was CA2014.
Year One may be able to help.
