Building a rear for my convertible. Scrapping together parts. I am thinking 3.23 gear, possible 3.42 gear for the 8.5" 10 bolt. I have been looking for posi carriers for a while, and might have a good deal lined up for a 2 series carrier. Can I get a gear to fit without a spacer?
They make a ring gear spacer too. I probably have one in my drawer but they arent too safe if you race at all.
As long as youre not hardcore racing it, a Mr Gasket 908A spacer works great. Ive never had a problem with one. clean the threads real good, use red loctite and check the bolts during the offseason.
...and yes, someone out there does make "thick gears" I forget who.. I personally have installed a few sets and they work great so I kow theyre out there. Ill try to find where I got them..
I believe Monzaz stated to use longer bolts when using the ring gear spacer...he has the part number so call Jim and ask for it.
I got with Jim and have the parts lined up. Just have to figure out what gear I want to use. Thanks everybody. btw. I will use a spacer on the 2 series carrier, and put a 3.xx gear on it. Jim said it would work fine if done properly. With longer bolts and red locktite.
if have used the same mr gasket ring gear spacer for 25 yrs.i race just about every week end.456 gears slicks n ladder bar set up.every spring i pull the cover and recheck all the bolts have never had a issue with breaking the spacer or the ring gear bolts coming loose.i run 10.80s with the small chevy.and 60ft 1.48.still running the stock 12-bolt axles too.ive abused it with the 430 bbb also.mayb ive just been lucky but it still working good..
yes the c-clips are still in use,i need to put a c-clip eliminator kit in.ive been beating on them for along timeray: :3gears:
Just to update....I think I was mistaken about 8.5" thick gears. I cant find them anywhere. and I mean anywhere. Back in my 4x4 days I had done an 86ish K5 and a 79 K10, and I thought I used the thick gears for both of them. In the end I now believe the 79 K10 had a 12 bolt truck rear and that is what I used the thick gear in. sorry for false hope. I do use the 908a spacer a lot and it works great.
yEP, 12 bolt would have the thick gears . Spacer WILL work fine to 12 sec range and I have tested spacers with slicks and big block 1.70 60 foot ...If you are going faster than 12 sec you probably spent good money to make your car that fast and YOU SHOULD spend some more to get the rear end parts you need also. Jim DO NOT GET CHEAP NOW WITH A 11 SEC AND FASTER CAR....LOL. :O:eek2:
The 3.08 gear, and spacer are going on my 2 series posi carrier and will be in my daily driver convertible build. We have built 8.5 that have done well down the track. This one just needs to cruise. We are hoping for a 9 second pass this year in the black car. With an 8.5" rear. Already doing 1.4x 60 ft's.
