No one that I know of makes a 3.73 for that rear. Your best hope is to find a 3.42 from a Riv GS.

This is the ONLY way you'll ever get 3.73:1 gears under a '68 Riviera without building one of these by yourself...

Jim (a.k.a. "monzaz" here on V8Buick) built this using Riviera tubes, brackets, backing plates, etc. together with corporate 8.5" center section. You get a bolt-in rear that can use aftermarket gears and posi replacement parts.

Just getting your hands on an original three series 9-3/8" posi carrier and 3.42:1 gears will cost you upwards of $400.00 and you get used parts at best that you have to set up. And these show up every other year if you're lucky.

If you ask me, this is a no-brainer for $999.00 plus shipping:

I saw this a few days ago and thought it was a scam or misprint. I was under the impression there was no where to go for gears other than what was offered stock. 3:07-3:42- 3:91(could have gotten one last yr if I had the 400.00)

Jim had it for sale here a couple of times, no takers. I think if the economy had been better it would've been gone in a heartbeat.

I saw this earlier before I posted my question... I think I'll try to take this on as a project. Monzaz's idea is a brilliant one.

I was going to build them in 9.5 3/4 ton truck centers too BUT it just never took off.

My G-body 8.5 8.8 custom rears are big movers once people realized it was built right.

Like Doritos... buy it! I'll make more...lol :3gears:

    Take care guys.

I can put a round four bolt full size car coupler on also...A lot of larger GM cars came with the 8.5 rears and they had the constant velocity drive shafts also. THAT is NOT an issue.

OK. My 1st thought was "isn't 3.42 good enough?" Wow I would not go to3.73. In a Riv. But I understand it's your car. 3.42 should get you a good launch.

I had a 68 Riviera and I got a 3.07 posi for $50 - had to go pick it up. I see the 3.42 posis "quite a bit" if I look. They are out there, but yes, people who have them know it and want at least $400.

Monzaz, still looking for a posi for my 73 Centurion. This car has the high performance option (dual exhaust / big valve 455) Why no posi? eeerrr:idea2:

WHat size rear was under the centurion? 12 bolt cover 10 bolt cover? Let me know I have a few LARGE car posi units here... BUT no gears. Jim

2.73 is the best ratio I have. :(

Trust me... If I had an extra grand to throw at it, I definately would; and I wouldn't take the time to learn.

    Jim,

71-73 Centurion's, with the 455, have the big car 9 3/8" rear. I'm not positive about the 350's in '73, they may have the same rear as the LeSabre's.

No not originally...lol. What does HE have now. After 40 years WHO knows what is under the car buy now. :) Jim

Please post pictures and then we can work on finding parts. :TU:

I found out by accident many years ago that the "10 bolt" in my '68 Wildcat used a 12 bolt differential case. Stock gears are a 3.07 ratio.

I bought a posi unit from a '68 Electra 10 bolt (with the ring, pinion and axles) and when I got around to doing the swap, noticed the ring gear was attached with 12 bolts and the posi parts looked just like the stuff in the Chevy 12 bolt. Turned out, everything was identical, including the 30 spline axles and side gears.

If I can find the old 2.73 Electra ring and pinion now, I'll compare it to some of the Chevy stuff I have laying around.
