Hello all I got a lead on two posi rearends and would like to know what do you guys think would be the best for my application. The car is a 72 limited that I would be looking to possibly turbo or even twin turbo in the future. I won't be hitting the track often but, mainly going for the WOW factor, would my better bet be the 3.23 or 3.42 gear ratio for the posi? It'll be a lot of torque I believe and what would you guys suggest for the tranny? Thanks much again in advance.

An Electra is intended to be street driven. Unless your cam is too wild, you will enjoy the 3.23 more than the 3.42.

I would worry more on the size and whether the rear is rebuilt USED is scary when your talking all that torque. :( JIm

GN's and T types used 3.42. Not too much difference from the 3.23 but definately more seat of the pants with the 3.42 I personally like the 3.42, I have it in my GS as well my GN and it if you want the most off the line go, the 3.42 is the way to go. Either way, it is better than the 2.56 peg legs that were in most of that years buicks.

With everything that's known about how difficult it is to come across a 9 3/8 posi with decent gears, what can I do as far as a rebuild? I know I'm changing the fluid and attempt to make it look good, but what can be done as far a rebuild? The car will be a cruiser, but if I'm at a show or something and wanna lay down a serious burnout, or do so doughnuts, I don't want it to disappoint me and better yet leave the onlookers in aww.

You will have enough Tq to leave rubber with which ever gear you chose.I've done it easyly with the 3:07 behind a stock 430. Its been my experience that at a show grandstanding is usually frowned upon. I once did a victory burn at a show and was labbled a poor sport. They thought I was pissed about something. Heard all about it on FB

If You are going to turbo up your Lectra i would look for something like 3,08 or even 2,78. You still get great acceleration but you also get super efficient cruiser.

    Peace.

If these are a 9 3/8ths rear your talking about, grab both of 'em:TU:

I was gonna say... if you find both gear sets, I'll buy the one you dont use for my Pontiac.......I think those are pretty rare! That said, 3.08's are pretty common, and actually are a pretty good gear, especially over a 2.56. I went from a 3.08 to a 3.23 in my 65, the effect was really minimal.

Thanks for all the info guys but, what should be done in the area of getting it ready to handle torque that could be distributed by a twin turbo 455?

IMO, the 3.23's will serve you better, it'll be easier to launch. Depends on your tire choice, etc...

If the rear is indeed a 9 3/8th's rear a good stock rebuild should be all thats needed I would think, those rear ends are huge:eek2: 3.08 gears would do fine, or 3.23's. Turbos react better when the engine is under a load verses a lighter load that a deeper gear would provide. Almost the same theory as a turbo wont build boost by just free revving in park verses brake torquing.

Hey guys I went with the 3.23s, I just have a couple issues with it. The cover has two bolts that have sheared off and need to be extracted. Have any one else had this problem and if so how to fix it, where it will still seal properly. Thanks much guys.

I think your going to have to drivv and tap the holes. Happened to me on the 65 too, and narurally it was the hole up top I couldnt get a straight shot on....

good luck. What did you do with the 3.42's?
