I found a set of 3.23's to replace my 2.92's. Are you doing the same thing? I still have the 2.92's if your interested..
Yes, I have 2.93s in right now, I wanted to lower the gear to get a little more take off. 3.23s are as low as I can go without swapping carriers. How do you like the change? Can you even tell a difference?
Not much different, but every bit helps. Besides, it a good excuse to put in fresh pinion bearings, and seals. Oh, and wheel bearings, etc, etc. Low and behold, you've dumped another few hundred bucks into your car! ou:
It's funny how that works. ou: I am having a devil of a time removing the shaft bolt from the carrier. The bolt has broken off inside of the shaft. I ordered a kit from Skyline to drill into it and get it out, but 2 24volt rechargeable drill batteries later, I am not any farther.
check that carrier over close. If the spider gears sieze on the shaft, and the shaft rotates, it will shear the special lock bolts, and probably score the carrier. very common. Good luck.
gears I have a set of 3:90 gears..out of my 65 lesabre. I used a spacer & the original carrier. Don't know if these will fit your needs..... I have been told these are for a 8.2 rear. I can give you part numbers if interested. Tom :TU:
If he is looking a 68-70 8.2 set up my understanding from Roger's (OPH's)earlier posts is that pre 68 8.2 gears will not work. But check with Roger to confirm this understanding.
I have heard something to this effect (that there is an age drop off where they won't fit). The rear is actually a 1970 Pontiac rear end. The spacer idea is interesting. I had previously thought that if I wanted to move to lower gears (from the 2.93s to something around 3.55) that I would have to completely change carriers. Is that not the case? Will spacers do the trick?
Ring gear spacer I have had success with the ring gear spacer... The only concern, that I could see, would be a strength issue. Tom :TU:
