I was testing my switch last night with a test light and noticed the stator energizes at about 1/2 throttle and the detent energizes at full.

Should the stator energize at 1/2 throttle? I always assumed it only did it at idle and at full throttle.

    Thanks Rick

At Idle and about 60% throttle and above. The early 400 switch pitch transmissions lacked a 3-2 valve, so there is not part throttle downshift. Also the valvebody is calibrated in such a way as to upshift the trans into 3rd early. Buick intended the car to accelerate on high stall rather than on the downshift to 2nd, unless you are wide open.

That explanation makes good sense. I did the valve body swap with a 71BC as suggested by Marc DeConti (DCM422) so my shift characteristics will be "normal". I wonder if I should make the stator energize at full throttle to coincide with the detent?

I wouldn't. I think you will get better performance leaving it the way it is. With the 71BC valvebody, it will kick down at part throttle, and you'll have high stall at the same time. I think that is perfect.
