Finally got the built 200-4R in the skylark. Now the car is even more severely traction challenged. :Brow: Anybody tried to put 275-50X15s on the back of a 66 or 67? If so, what wheel backspace was used?:Do No:

295/50's fit my '64 using a factory 7" steel wheel. I'm assuming they are 4" backspace.

    Adam,

how big are the 50's tires you have ? have you measured them ? i have a chance to by a pair of Hoosier Q/T's that are 295/60's and had come to the conclusion that they wouldn't fit......:Do No: .......what do you think.??? if your 50's fit the 64' i would think the 60's would.........not sure though...................

    thanks and later..................................

Thanks Adam. I have heard that the wheel well on the 64/65 will accept a larger tire than the 66/67. Not sure about that though.
Dave the 275-50's are about 11.4 inches section width and around 11 inches tread width. 295's would be even wider and 60 series would be about an inch taller than the 50's.

Dave, I measured a long time ago, but don't remember. The car is 200 miles from me right now, or I'd do it again tonight :). They are 295/50 BFG's. The 60's might be kinda tall (I think my 50's are), but should clear with the right wheel. Section is 12.3" I think according to Jegs? As I mentioned, you'll probably need a 7" wheel to make it work, or maybe 8.5" with more backspace than the run-of-the-mill wheels. It WILL be tight though.

Carl, I know there has been some confusion regarding the 66-7's having the later width rear, or the same as the 64-65 cars. That may be the difference in tire room. I'd be surprised (but not shocked) if they had less room than the 64-65 cars.

    275-50's

Thanks for the info Adam. The 12 bolt that I broke was the narrow (54.25") one. Cost a fortune to buy cause it was only produced for just over 2 years. I have 235-60's on 7 inch Cragar SS's which have 4 1/8" backspace. The tires were so close to the wheel well that you could only stick your fingers in between on each side.
I had Moser build me a new 12 bolt 1/2 inch narrower on each side (53.25"). Now there is more room. Since my first post I have done some measuring and checking on tire sizes. It appears that 275-50's will fit on 8 inch rims with 4.5 or 5 inch backspace. With the stock width (54.25) it appears that it would have to be 5 or 5.5 inch backspace.
Thanks again guys. Gotta save for new rear wheels and tires!:pp

I need new wheels too! My car is getting a set of Buick disc-brake rally's. I think I can squeeze 15x10's in the back with the right backspacing...6" I think. My quarters have been trimmed and pushed out too though. If you ever go for new paint, a good body-man can get you at least another 1/2" on each side and no-one will notice.

    Thanks Adam.
I cringe at the thought of some one messing with the wheel wells on my 'Lark. Here in the rust belt it is hard enough to get a decent car without a 55 gallon drum of bondo in it. I'll pass on the wheel well mods and work on the backspace angle. What are Buick disc-brake rally's? Are they similar to the chibby rally with poverty hub caps?

Yes, the wheel is identical to the chevy wheels, but the centercap is like the '67 Chevy cap with the exception of there being a tri-shield emblem similar to the Buick roadwheel centercap. Also, the wheels were painted body color on the Buicks. These wheels were used with all disc brake cars until '69 I believe, when Buick revised the roadwheels AKA "Buick Rallys" to clear the disc-brake calipers.

Buick never used a 15 inch wheel in this style. Only a 14 inch with a special rim to clear the disk breaks. The 15 inch wheels are Chevy wheels.

Dave, Those wheels look great! Is the cap available repro? Would chibby rally's work with the Buick cap?:TU:

The Buick center caps are not reproduced. Yes, they fit the Chevy wheels I have 15x7's on my 66. You can make a set from Chevy caps but the finish wont be right. The Buick caps have a brushed look and the Chevy caps are polished. The center is held on with screws.
