275-300hp on 87oct street build

    Howdy,

    What kind of parts would it take to get around 275-300hp out of a 350 for the street on 87 octane? I'm not stuck on the octane requirements but I'd like to do it if I can. Cars are sooo much more enjoyable to drive if you don't wince every time you fill them up compared to my daily drivers.

    Headers and HEI or MSD ignition, along with a Q-jet.

    If your just looking for 275-300 at the crank, its pretty easy to do. My basically bone stock motor made 210 at the wheels which is probably around 245-260 at the crank, 73 low compression motor. So a set of headers and better carb tune would probably get it there.

    The 87 octane thing might be alittle touchy though, even my low compression motor doesn't even like 87, tried it. I put 93 in and just leave it there.

    A good running motor with a set of headers and good 2.5" exhaust with a "GOOD" tuned motor should make the power your looking for.

    Personally I try to avoid looking for HP numbers I prefer to look at what I want the vehicle to do. Cruise car.....Street/Strip.....Strip only, there is alot of things I would do different for each of those setups. Things like gear ratio, transmission/converter, exhaust, carb....etc.


    Think about your cars purpose for yourself and then build the car to do that, if dyno queen is your game then just shoot for the HP number. Its your call.

    Depends on what year the 350 is. If it's '70......your already over 300hp at the crank.

    With 8.3:1 I made 398 HP at 5600 and over 400 ft ot tq with a 77 Buick 350, but that was with a 1000 cfm carb. For the street a 800 cfm Q jet from a 71-74 would be your best bet, or a 750 cfm Buick 350 Q jet second best. With a 850 cfm holley, ported Poston intake, home ported and polished heads, oversised valves, hooker headers, TA 212 cam i lost a few HP and tq but the lower rpm throttle response was much better.

    Car: 1981 Regal Indy Pace Car
    Purpose: Nice day and weekend driver. Needs to have enough power to take an onramp with confidence and not worry about how much I had for lunch and the gas level before overtaking on a 2 lane road.
    Transmission: Stock TH200-4R, probably from an AA code Caddy V6
    Rear gears: Stock, probably 2.73 or 3.08. Only way I'm changing this is to completely swap the rear axle so it's not likely.
    Exhaust: true duals matched to the engine (bigger is not better, especially with that tall of a rear gear)

    I don't have either the engine or the car but I'm making plans to file so when I do find one of the roughly 100 cars out there I can move forward with ease.

    You will want 2.5" at least.... Any smaller and you will loose power.

    I think polishing your combustion chambers would help with the detonation resistance for 87 octane. Along with what the others said 275 would be easy.

    I agree and also removing the little bump in the combustion chamber of the heads is a good idea for detonation resistance. Some people even smooth the edges of the piston tops for the same reason.
