Had an email from the last US owner of the Buick ( G'day Chris M.!) He's told me that the cam he fitted was a 268H-10 grind. I'm happy with the way the cars runs- its only a cruiser after all.
Just wondering what others think of the cam? And if they've done anything else to make it work better. Just interested, not burning with desire to tear into the engine.

Cam is a BS 268H-10, and once again, thank you for taking the time to reply.

    Cheers, Chris

Is that a competition cams part?if it is there Really are better choices then it . The crower has proven itself and so has the 284-88 for street . But you left out your specs. What compression is engine, convertor size/trans type, rear gear ratio, carb.headers or not, exhaust type. Stock heads? All these will affect how well a cam will work . Tire size can affect it to some degree. Also decreeing cam can change how well it works some also. For the most part I would suggest something else. Look at the crower level 2 and 3 cams and check buyracingparts.com about a custom grind. You can look at Howards cams also.

The 268H sounds like a Comp Cam. I put that in my car in 1983 and ran it for 10 years. I had it in a 71 stock motor no port work nothing. stock stall stock gears in back probably about a 260. I did not have a Q-Jet back then as they were crap then. I ran a 650 Holley double pumper spread bore, talk about a loud carb. I could not degree the cam then because If anybody knew about it, they didn't know how, I put it in on the dots on the sprockets. It probably could have been advanced 2 more degrees. I was a little slow out of the hole but by the time you hit second gear it is rolling. I could do 100 mph in second gear.

I later put in a 373 gear and ran a best of 14.89 spinning the tires and using a Thermoquad Carb, again I am using a stock stall, no real work on the motor. You need about a 2200 stall for the convertor and about a 355 gear at the most would be good. Put on a Q-Jet if you have a stock intake. Don't use a adapter to put on a square bore carb as this will not work at all, tried all of that. If you have a TA intake then any carb will be ok but I would stay away from the Edelbrock carb, Use Holley or equivalent carb, and I would use a 650 double pumper, or your Q-jet if you are happy with its performance. There are a couple of guys here that build very good Q-Jets.

The downfall of the motor is the oiling system get the plate and new gears from TA Performance to get the oil system up to par. Really it needs to have the oil passages in the pump cover opened up more then if you get motor work done you can open up the oiling in the engine.

If you do not want to mess with the motor the cam will work fine, it has a nice lope to it and it has good power I smacked around a lot of people with it. No different than any other cam just have to tweek the other parts to compliment it. 2200 stall and about a 355 gear should do it. Then drive it until you get tired of it and then upgrade it.

    Have Fun.

Be careful with the spring selection. I dismantled a 350 with a Comp 260 cam and it hammered all the exhaust seats down to where the lifters were completely unloaded and the valves would no longer seal.

Most of what I see with problems are set up wrong initially, goofed up installed heights, mismatched parts, and the 'tech line' with the bigger cam co's are fairly useless.
The Comp XE line for sbc is the one with spring control problems.

Thanks guys. I'm happy with the engine as it is. Cam aside, its a stock 350-4 to the best of my knowledge, ditto the converter & 2.73 (ish) gears.
It does me for what I want out of it. If it ain't broke........

    Cheers,

    Chris

I liked the 268H comp cam in my 72 350. I wouldn't have wanted to go any bigger without looking at compression ratio, etc.

It performed well as a street performance cam for me.
