This is for a 70 Skylark. I am getting a set of 15X8 4.5 backspace American racing salt flats. Trying to decide on 245/60's or 255/60's. Currently have 235/70's and at 28 inch diameter they just clear but no rubbing after a few mods. The 255's are 27.1" diameter and ther 245's are 26.5 " diameter. Any experience with these sizes?

I have a pair of 255/60/15s on the rear of my 71 Sky Custom. They are on stock 15x7 rallyes. They dont rub, but thats because the tire isnt wide enough to go out the side past the wheel well. From the back, they dont look like 255s at all, they look pretty skinny, so i was thinking of upgrading to 275s. The 255's are a nice fit though, they fill the wheel well nicely, and look amazing from the side.

    they will fit

I had 255/60-15' B.F. Goodrich Radial T/A's with 15x7 Rally's on all 4 corner's of my old 72 Stage 1, and they didn't rub, but this was a stock height car,not lowered in any way. :3gears:

Thanks Tom, I think I will go with the 255's, measurements look good just wanted to hear if anyone else had good results with this size.

I have 255/60-15's all the way around on 15 X 7 Rallye wheels. Never a problem.

Hey Doug, please let me know how you make out with the 8" rim and the 255's.I also run 255x60x15 all around, but like the rest here,on 7" rims.I'm holding off on the 8" rim for the front because I'm not sure if it will rub.In my head I'm thinking it works, the width wont change and the tire should look more squared off on the wider wheel. Then someone told me that with the offset and the extra inch in the wheel it will be drawn into the well closer which might be an issue.I know some have the 245's on 8" rims with no problems, but can't find anyone that has 255's on 8's for the front. Please post some photo's when you get it done. Thanks,Tom

    Thanks Larrry,
Tom, as far as I know the stock Rally 15" has a 4" offset and the wheels I have ordered are a 4.5" offset. The tire be in the same place with the 8" as the 7" sure hope the theory holds out. Will let everybody know when the wheels are in.

    Hi guys,
Don't know if this will help but I had a set of Dunlop 255\60 15's on the stock 15 inch rallye rims on all 4 corners of my 1970 Monte Carlo and they worked great. If I remember, they replaced a 275\70 15 on back and actually looked and performed a lot better. If I had only replaced the bad ball joint it would have been better.

Finally got the wheels in. I put 295/60/15 Nitto drag radials on the back. On the front I played back and forth between 255's and 245's and finally decided on the 245's. Both worked but the spacing inside the wheel well just looked a little better. The 8 inch with 4.5 back spacing worked fine. Will post pics soon.

Working with a new (better?) camera and getting some distortion from the resizing. Here is the best looking view in my opinion. I worked hard on this stance and really like it. This is not stock suspension. I have the GW tall spindle conversion so it is dropped in the front. I really noticed it yesterday when I was parked next to a 70 GTO and the nose on the GSx was noticably lower.

    Doug,

Looks great. The rims are one of my finalist in choices though I'm thinking dark centers. Can you give us a like close up of the rear showing fender clearance. Would you be willing to share rear wheel spec's?

    Thanks

Both front and rear are American Racing Salt Flats with 4.5 inch backspacing. I do have a Chevelle 12 bolt rear end and do not know if there is any difference in the width. With the 295's on the back I have no clearance issues. will get some closeups tomorrow. I am probably going to do some paint work to the wheels to make them look a little closer to rally wheeels. Sounds like a good winter project.

By the way the more I use the Nittos the better they grab. Looking forward to a little drag racing this weekend.

    Tomorrow =)

We're still waiting for more beautiful pic's

With 4.5 BS, how much room do you have left to the inside? My track width likely varies since I have a Moser replacement 9" Ford.

    opps,
Have been under the car getting the helper fuel pump installed. Should have checked then. Going to finish that this weekend so will check clearances. I know that I have good clearances in the back with the 295's. I do not think that we really start having problems until you start using 315's.

Got my 60 fts down to 1.8's and turned a 13.12 still running out of fuel in 3rd.

Will write a note on my forhead to take some more pics.
