I was Planning on building a hi horse BUICK 350, but I just read an article in a HEMMING'S rod magazine that said you can easily attain 300+ HP by building up the 231. They said that this can be done on a modest budget. Having read that I have begun to rethink my strategy. Would this be a good idea? I have heard nothing but good about my 231 v6. Anyone out there done this?Any ideas?
Old Saying goes like this: "There's do replacement for displacement". Having said that, I'd say that if you want to be different, you can build a 231 v6 that would net 300hp but it would cost more than building a 300hp 350. You should be able to squeeze 330hp out of a mildly built 350 (cam, carb, intake, headers, ignition). Doing that on a 231 would probably also include new rockers and shafts, some head porting, and a little more money. If you really want a v6, you should consider the 252 which is essentially a factory stroked 231. It might be harder to find, but you start with an extra 21 cubes and longer stroke = more torque. -Phil
the 252 has the same crank as the 231. Its the bore size thats different. ________ SensualDesire live
Yep, that's definately my mistake. I always thought the 252 had a taller deck for some reason but of that was the case then they wouldn't take the same intake manifold. Here's the actual specs CU cyl dis bore stroke 231 V6 3.8 3.800 3.400 252 V6 4.1 3.965 3.400 350 V8 349 3.800 3.850 -Phil
