    you need the adaptor

Edit, after looking at the pictures of benstiens adaptor that cobravii put up It looks like it will be very tight on a a- body skylark. I can measusre mine later with the eelco. As for the 2004r or the 700r4, I can tell you I love the 2004r I put in. To see what it does behind a nail head look for one of my old threads..kinda slow in da nailhead section... I was still working the adjustments out of the tv cable and was not getting full throttle in the video. Also if you are interested look for ...I couldn't drive to yardleys, so...It has a few adaptor pictures. It was not hard to put together and I even replaced my 4-speed with it till I someday try and restore the car

    Bendtsens Adapter, $675:

Another option is the new replacement bellhousing for the GM 4L60 and 4L65 transmissions from Russ Martin for $575.
It's not on his webpage yet, but here's his site:

A little info on the 4L60/65 trans:

It's going to require a control box that'll cost $600+ for an aftermarket one. Will also need a throttle position sensor for the carb.
This would be a cool setup with a paddle shifter!
