My brother's 2008 Sierra CC/SB has 93k on it and #4 cylinder has a scored cylinder due to broken ring and/or broken ring land on piston. Need some suggestions for an engine shop that can fix this problem with the existing engine or replace the short block with a crate replacement in the NW Indiana area....he lives in Chesterton..about 60 miles east of Chicago. Thanks!
I would use fine emery cloth to smooth the score in the cylinder wall and then replace the ring and piston and run it. Just find a used stock piston, should be easy to find and low cost. I seem to be able to find 5.3L chevy engines for those trucks for about $250 complete around here so another option is swapping in another engine but I still say replace just whats broken and run it.
You can try to repair it or just replace the engine. A lot of folks are afraid to work on new vehicles because of the wiring. Well, i would rather swap a new engine than an older one. It is all plug and play, every plug is different with exception of coils and injectors but these are often numbered and just the layout of the harness will tell you where they go. No dizzy to pull, reset and retime. No swapping carbs, brackets and springs/spacers. You drop the engine in, bolt it in, plug it in and fire it, done!
That vehicle has a 5 yr 100,000 mile powertrain warranty on it. If it was a late in the model year purchase--it might be covered.
He is out of warranty by 7 months...looking for a shop to do the work...the dealer he bought it from is trying to screw him over on it. No problem doing a crate short block swap...just need to find someone qualified to do it.
Your brother can contact me (Joe)@ 708-418-5720,I have two fantastic referrals for him,one in Crownpoint IN and one in Lynwood IL. Both shops are well respected and very fair, the owners are also hands on.
